Hiya!
I’d definitely agree — there are so many misconceptions about university life.
I’m technically a uni dropout myself. I completed a year studying in London before deciding it wasn’t for me. When I decided to return to university at 21, I was convinced I’d be the “grandma” of the group and struggle to make friends. Spoiler: that wasn’t the case at all!
Here are a few of the biggest uni misconceptions I’ve learned to ignore:
Misconception 1: Everyone will be 18 and fresh out of A-levels
Not true! People come to uni at all ages and from all sorts of backgrounds. Whether you’re straight out of school, taking a gap year, or returning to study later in life — you’ll find people who share your experiences and goals.
Misconception 2: Lecturers are scary and only there to teach
Honestly, my lecturers have been some of the most supportive and inspiring people I’ve met. They genuinely care about students and go the extra mile to help us succeed.
Misconception 3: You’ll find your people straight away
You will make friends — but sometimes it takes a little while. And that’s okay! University is full of opportunities to meet people, from societies to study groups to random chats in the library.
