Uni or Course – What’s Actually More Important?

Lately, I’ve been stuck thinking about what matters more the uni or the course. My top picks are Glasgow, Strathclyde, and Edinburgh, and I’m really into Accounting and Finance ( I live in Scotland). But then I start wondering if I should switch it up, like maybe do Accounting and Maths at Glasgow instead as Glasgow is a really good uni and RG too.

Hi there,

I'm a 3rd year student studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, and I'd have to say my advice would be to look beyond just the course or ranking tables. All three universities you're looking at are really good, and as you said Edinburgh and Glasgow are both Russel Group.

For me the things that will make or break your uni experience are usually external to the course itself (which will probably be quite similar across institutions). I'd recommend focusing more on things like the campus itself, is it spread out, is there lots of study space, good places to eat, accommodation nearby? The city is also a big factor, do you think you'll enjoy living there, do you like the atmosphere, which city's culture do you prefer, is culture and nightlife important to you? Also consider the things happening at each uni, do they have clubs and societies you're interested in, how are the sports facilities, is their student union good, do they host fun events, how are the support services?

I've found that these things are what have made my experience at Glasgow so incredible over the past few years, and although I cannot recommend Glasgow enough, I'd urge you to think carefully about which city/ university will be the right fit for YOU.

All the best with your decision and application!
