Whether you're starting this Autumn or in January we understand that moving away from home for the first time can feel exciting but also daunting. Packing well helps you settle in quickly, stay organised, and feel comfortable in your new space. Home comforts like photos, posters and decorations will help make your room feel like home are a great place to start.

Here’s a breakdown of the other essentials:
1. Important Documents 📄

Passport or photo ID
Bank cards and bank details (secured)
University acceptance letter and enrolment documents
Accommodation contract and insurance details
Medical records and prescriptions

2. Bedroom Essentials 💡
Bedding (duvet, pillows, sheets, and mattress protector)
Clothes hangers
Laundry basket/bag
Desk lamp and extension leads
Storage boxes for under-bed or shelf organisation

3. Bathroom Items🛁
Towels
Toiletries
Shower caddy or bag (especially if bathrooms are shared)
Flip-flops (if using communal bathrooms)

4. Kitchen Supplies (if self-catered)🍴
Basic utensils and crockery
Tea towels and dishcloths
Reusable containers for leftovers
Top tip: Bring only what you need, you can buy extras later and share with flatmates. Otherwise, you could end up with 5 toasters, 6 cheese graters and 30 pots and pans in one small kitchen!

5. Clothing👔
Everyday comfy wear (don’t forget your big coat!)
Sportswear and comfortable lounge clothes
Smart outfit (for formal events or interviews)
Enough underwear and socks to last between laundry days

6. Study Supplies📚
Laptop and charger
Notebooks and stationery (if you’re old school!)
Practical rucksack or tote bag for lectures
USB stick or portable hard drive to back up work/ Set up a cloud storage account like OneDrive

7. Everyday Living Items🛒
Reusable shopping bags
Cleaning supplies (multi-surface spray, sponges, bin bags)
Basic first aid kit (painkillers, plasters, cold/flu medicine)
Small toolkit (screwdriver, scissors, tape)

The biggest piece of advice is don’t get stressed out over buying loads of new items.
Best to wait to meet your housemates and then see what you don’t have already between you!
