Hey there,

I didn’t have a car during my 3 undergrad degree. It was absolutely fine the bus network was great and when I wanted to go home I caught the train - I’d really recommend getting a rail card as you save a lot of money. Having a car would have been a bit pointless to be honest as the parking was really limited on campus and I would have needed to buy a permit. When I lived in a private rental during 2nd year it was only street parking. I was lucky that my accommodation was always within walking distance from the campus.

Hope this helps! Please feel free to ask anything further though.

Hi @Flower-koala

I hope you are well! I have just started my second year of uni at LJMU and have done it without a car! I can honestly say that I have not needed a car at all during my time at university as there is so much public transport and during my first year I was so central and therefore was able to walk everywhere!

I have also found that it is cheaper without a car as you do not need to pay for things such as petrol and parking etc so that is always a bonus too! I live nearly 3 hours away from Liverpool so just get the train back home when needed which has always worked out! Where are you planning on going for uni? And what do you intend on studying?

I hope this has helped you slightly. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help! You can definitely do uni without a car even if you live far away so if you have a car back home then you have the choice of either. If you decide to not take your car then you can always change your mind at Christmas and take it up after the break!

Good luck with uni when you do go!

Thanks, Matt 🙂

Hey @Flower-koala,

I didn't have a car throughout all three years of my undergraduate degree - and to be honest, I didn't feel like I ever needed one! Lots of students don't have cars and those that do can often face issues with parking availability on campus/in halls and high maintenance costs. Unless you're using your car for a specific purpose (e.g. delivery work, commuting), owning one whilst at university can sometimes be an unnecessary expense.

Most universities in the UK are based in towns/cities with good public transport links and lots of halls of residence are purposefully situated a walkable distance from campus. Not owning a car shouldn't put you at any disadvantage. 🙂

Best of luck with university!

Hi there!

It's great that you are reaching out and thinking about these things before university.

I am currently studying my fifth and final year at university (3 years Undergraduate and 2 years MA) and I didn't have a car for any of my degree.

There are a lot of positives and negatives when it comes to having a car at university, but it depends where you are planning on studying. For example, if you were to study in a city like Liverpool, there are many transport links that a lot of the time end up cheaper than owning a car.

My best friend from my undergraduate degree was from Ireland and she had a car but didn't bring it over because she didn't want to pay the parking fees and she knew she wouldn't need it with all of the transport links. However, because of this, she found having a car to be an inconvenient as she still had to pay tax and insurance for a car that wasn't being driven.
Most students won't have a car, or if they do, they won't bring it to university.

I hope this helps, I just wanted to come on and share some observations I've noticed regarding this topic during my studies.
