AI and Plagiarism Detected on Personal Statement

Hi, I'm just wondering if there is anyone who is facing the same concern as me. I want to apply for a master's program at a UK University, and writing a personal statement feels dramatic because how can something I write myself be detected as AI?

How am I supposed to write it then? I am really confused since the growth of these AI things.

I mean, AI follows what humans write; that is why it looks similar to human text. And now what really us is flagged as AI?

The AI detector is also making things scarier. All I feel when applying is just stress and confusion because I've already tried changing the structure of my essay a million times, and it still flagged as at least 40% AI.

Can anyone give me some suggestions?

First of all, don't panic!! Generally universities only flag up personal statements that are at least 60% ai, so you'll be okay 🙂

Although AI does follow human writing, it does have certain quirks that set it apart - things like the emdash (this instead of this - ), being too formal, too "fake" looking (idk how to explain this but you can see it when you read AI text) a bit too perfect (any person, no matter how good they are, will have minor flaws/style) or misusing words/repeating phrases.

You can't really safeguard against this, but if you're consistently getting 60% AI maybe try dropping the formality a bit, things like using conjunctions (is that what they're called? it's instead of it is and stuff), replacing any with -, and maybe using less complex/long words. But again, don't panic!! Hope this helps

Suggestion would be stop using AI detectors, because there is no point.
You are right that AI is learning from human written language - by using these detectors you are feeding the beast.
If you have written an authentic statement without the help of AI, you don't need a checker to tell you whether or not AI has been used - you know that.

Well to be fair I'm not exactly sure about it but I've known people submit statements that were marked as 40% ai sometimes and they were fine, so I assume there's a limit to how far they'll go.

Ah I see - we don't know that universities will be going about this in similar ways. I would also be careful about making up statistics when giving advice.

Fair enough.
As someone that reads and scores masters personal statements for a living - don’t use AI checking services and don’t stress yourself listening to the garbage % numbers they make up.

If you write it yourself, there is no need to worry. If you still want to double check if it's AI, most universities use a tool called TurnItIn. Students cant get access to this, but the most similar free software available is grammarly and quillbot. Check this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rklz3c5F1Ss&t=1092s
