Primary ed or slt?? Help!!

Hello! Just an introduction im in yr13 studying Sociology psychology and media studies my predicted grades are high thankfully so I don't need to worry about grade requirements only subject requirements.

But im interested in becoming a primary teacher its been my biggest aspiration but ive recently come across the speech and language therapy I was really interested in the career however I don't know really because I don't do biology alevel so idk if ill be at a disadvantage and I don't enjoy science thattt much but love psychology but I lke studying about rhe behaviour etc. So im not sure id I should apply on Ucas for both primary ed and speech and language but yeah how would I structure for both of these courses? I have work experience in working in a nursery, tutoring English children and have a sports leadership level 3 of supporting and leading sports classes in have a teen thrive learning about mental health etc. And also Future leaders.

can anyone give me advice much appreciated 🩷

You wont be able to write a convincing PS that adequately covers both career areas -it will be obvious that you are not 100% committed to either area. Its worth contacting some Unis to see if they would accept an alternative PS sent directly to them.

Whilst for SLT some Universities want a core-science - as one example, Newcastle normally requires AAB including one of the core sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) but will consider Psychology where applicants have strong science GCSEs etc. - many others only specify the required three grades.

Other degrees worth looking at are Psychology/Education, Sociology/Education, Childhood Studies, Disability Studies, Occupational Therapy etc. Remember that you can always do a PGCE later if you do still want to teach.

Yes I know my Personal statment won't be able to adequately cover both which is why I wish we could write different statement but the thing is I want to be able to have options you know? Im 99% set on primary teacher but theres a little 1% in me thats scared as because everhone talks about the negatives of being a teacher and the increased work load etc. And people keep saying don't go into it but its the only thing I want to do 😕 and speech and language therapy i hear both pros and cons so im considering it but inmm not sure abut rhe biology side im just so confused and conflicted but yes I have also looked into Psychology with education and it will overlap with my primary education very well the only problem is like Im just scared yk idk and ugh idk rlly but yeah

Plan a gap-year and get a job as a Teaching Assistant.
Nowhere does it say you can only go to Uni straight from school.

Try to arrange a day or two of shadowing experience with an SLT in a local hospital or outpatient clinic. This will help you understand the role to see if it is for you or not. Also book an open day at any uni offering SLT and talk to the staff about course content. Not having biology A level won't be an issue and talking to staff might reassure you. You have until January to submit your application so you have time to do this if you act quickly.

Another thing to bear in mind is that currently Student Finance England classify SLT courses as exception courses so you could get funding again if you chose to do it as a second undergraduate degree, and there is the option of taking a pre-registration masters course too (different policies apply in Wales and Scotland so let me know if you will get your finance from SFW or SAAS). So if you choose primary education now and decide later that it isn't the career for you, then you do have other options. Many mature students take healthcare courses as second degrees.
