A 2:1, good internships, and a flawless GRE quant score all contribute to your great profile. 👏Think about the following for Economics, Econ + Data, and Econ + Finance:Leading UK choices: Oxford, Warwick, Cambridge, UCL, and LSEStrong foreign choices include Bocconi, Tilburg, KU Leuven, ETH Zurich, and, if finance permits, prestigious US programs like Columbia, NYU, or Michigan.Make sure your statement of purpose is in line with the track you have selected (financial or data). Emphasise your quantitative and internship experience if you plan to pursue research or a PhD in the future.

Hi there,

With a strong 2:1 on track, internships under your belt, and a GRE score of 170, you’re in a great position for either route. The choice between MSc Economics and MSc Data Science really depends on the kind of work you want to do day-to-day: Economics leans toward policy, markets, and strategic analysis, while Data Science focuses more on coding, modelling, and deploying analytical products.

At London South Bank University (LSBU), you can tailor your path depending on your interests. The MSc Data Science is a hands-on, employer-focused programme that uses tools like R, SQL, SAS, and Tableau, with an optional work placement route (available from September 2025). The course is mapped to BCS accreditation guidelines, ensuring the curriculum aligns with industry standards and builds practical, job-ready skills.

Unfortunately, LSBU no longer offers the MSc International Economics and Strategy, but we do offer the MSc Accounting and Finance, which could be a great alternative if you’re interested in combining your analytical and quantitative background with financial decision-making and business insight. This course provides a strong grounding in corporate finance, financial management, and data analysis, making it a solid choice if you’re leaning toward economics and finance-based careers.

How to decide: if you enjoy coding (Python/R), building models, and working with data-driven systems, the Data Science route would suit you best, roles in this area include data analyst, machine learning engineer, and BI developer. On the other hand, if you’re more interested in understanding markets, strategy, and financial evaluation, and you want to develop strong analytical skills without as much emphasis on software engineering, the Accounting and Finance MSc may be the right fit.

Finally, LSBU’s central London location gives you access to a wealth of opportunities, from tech and finance companies to public sector organisations. The university also has strong industry links, meaning you’ll benefit from guest lectures, networking events, and placement opportunities. If you’d like to find out more, I’d highly recommend visiting our Open Day on Saturday 15th November, where you can meet lecturers, discuss dissertation topics, and explore how each programme can align with your career goals.
