St. Andrews - two choices on UCAS

St. Andrews is my top choice uni. I'm going to apply for English Lit, which has a standard offer of IB 38. I'm thinking of also applying to Comparative Lit, which is run by a different department and has a standard offer of IB 36, in order to give myself two potential chances of getting in. If I apply for both, would they only give me the one offer? Or would it be possible to get two different offers, so I can put them down as Firm and Insurance? For context, I'd be paying overseas fees. Thank you.

Hello, I am currently a student at St Andrews who did this last year!

My course of choice was econ last year (i applied to this everywhere else), and since St andrews was also my top choice of uni i decided last minute to use up my remaining UCAS spot to apply to another St Andrews course that was sort of related to my PS (Sustainable Development)

Long story short - you will only be considered for one. As long as you wouldn’t mind being accepted onto either you could probably go for it, but as much as the uni dont advertise this it is basically impossible that you will get an offer for both. I recieved an offer for SD and was rejected from Econ which was guaranteed to happen considering how much more competitive Econ is. I cant say I know if both applications are actually looked at but you may be better off contacting the uni to find out (I might just be delusional that i actually got rejected).

As much as recieving this offer wasn’t the end of the world due to how flexible the degree structure is at St Andrews (this was the reason given on UCAS for being rejected from Econ) , it has meant that since it’s mandatory that I complete all essential modules for SD so i havent been able to do subjects I wouldve liked to do this year such as maths since it clashed on my timetable.

I would say it’s up to you and as long as you think you have a decent shot at both you will probably get into one of them, however it did cause me a lot of unnecessary stress!! I would honestly say contact admissions to get advice from them as they will know best and be able to explain it much better

Also! I would say that when you get to StAs it is very easy to swap between courses, so you could always just apply to comp lit and swap to english, you’d have to do comp lit for a year but then you could do english.

Comp lit is a lot less popular than English so you're probably more likely to get in if you apply for comp lit. You can also take english as a second subject
