The Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy (really captivated me when I was younger, still pretty good now)
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
(if we’re not talking about fiction) What If? by Randall Munroe

Matilda by Roald Dahl is still my favourite book.

nowadays I read historical romances set (mainly) in the second world war, family saga type books

There are some books/authors who not many seem to have heard of who are really good.
On the other hand, others are overrated.

When its about the ultimate favorite book, you are right. There are too many of them to choose the one and only.
