Music for Film or Sound Production?

I'm unsure whether to pick a course that's more focused on music and sound for film, or a broader film/media degree with music options. Has anyone studied a music tech or music production course for film or TV? What did you think?

Hi there,

Both sound like good options, but if you want to keep your options open a combined degree could be perfect for you. At Hope we offer Film and Visual Culture with Music Production.

I studied the Film and Visual Culture side of the course, and on the practical side you get to be part of a film crew and choose your specific roles. Within this you could solely focus on sound to further develop those skills. However, bear in mind you'd definitely need an overall interest in other aspects of film, as you'd be studying theory and other mediums such as photography as well.

The Music Production side of the course is separate, so you'd get to spend 50% of your studies focusing solely on that as well.

You could also consider our Film, TV, Radio and Media Production course. The radio section of this could definitely help cover your sound design interests, as you will become proficient in editing, audio restoration, mixing and mastering, while using industry-standard audio software.

Liverpool is the perfect place to study film/music courses, being the most filmed city in the UK (outside of London) and having a long and rich history in the music industry.

Hope in particular is ideal, as we have a specialist campus dedicated to the Creative and Performing Arts right in the city centre, named the Creative Campus. The uni overall only has around 5000+ students, and the Creative Campus is only a tiny section of that, so there are plenty of opportunities for you to get 1-1 support from tutors and use the facilities (such as recording studios, MacBook suites, practice rooms...) outside of class hours.

Have a look at the links provided for more details on the courses, and feel free to get back to me with any questions!

Hi there,
It’s great that you’re thinking carefully about how you want to combine your interest in film, music, and sound; that’s a fantastic mix of creativity and technical skill, and there are a few ways you can approach it depending on what kind of career you’d like to build.

At London South Bank University (LSBU), we offer the BA (Hons) Film and Television Practice, which gives you a broad understanding of film production while allowing you to explore specialist areas like sound design, editing, and post-production. This is perfect if you want a course that covers the full creative process, from storytelling and directing to sound and music for screen, while still giving you the flexibility to develop your interests in sound and audio as part of your projects.

🎬 Film and Television Practice gives you broader creative and production experience with opportunities to focus on sound within film.

The course is accredited by ScreenSkills, ensuring it meets industry standards and prepares you for professional work in the media sector. Studying at LSBU also means you’ll be in central London, surrounded by film studios, media companies, and creative agencies, a great place to start building connections.
If you’d like to get a feel for both courses, LSBU is holding an Open Day on Saturday, 15th November, where you can visit our studios, meet lecturers, and talk to current students who’ve worked on film and sound projects together.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

Whichever route you take, LSBU will give you the hands-on experience, creative freedom, and professional guidance to turn your passion for sound and film into a rewarding career.
