i am an aqa gcse student
i have this a Christmas carol analysis here but can anyone tell me that this is plausible? (please read this all out ik it might sound weird at first)
According to Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein, it states that when a human body dies, it weighs 21 grams lighter. this can be attributed the theory of the soul's existence. When scrooge says in stave 5 "... i am as light as a feather...' it can be said that according to Plato, and his theory of the Epithumetikon (The Appetitive Part), scrooges lightness that he feels is physical and metaphorical as the negative side of the soul physically is leaving his body and his mental state becomes one widely accepted by society. Perhaps the reason dickens employs this technique is to show to the Jacobean era what will happen if one redeems himself and the positive liberation and outcome that will appear. (no i dont do frankenstein and im stumped whether i can even mention another book especially frankenstein)
any and all help will be appreciated,
thank you
hi!!

i love that you're linking one book to another - especially the two most prominent classics !! just a note tho, from what ive seen frankenstein never mentions anything about the body losing 21 grams after death, this theory actually came from a 20th century experiment by dr. duncan macdougall, around 1907. additionally, the jacobean era would refer to early 1600s england, dickens would be writing in the victorian era in the 1800s. dickens probably wasn’t drawing directly on platonic philosophy, and the examiner might think its quite speculative.

i think the two ideas could be loosely applied more like an interpretive metaphor to extend your analysis, it shouldnt be the core of your paragraph. remember that you're being marked on your AOs, and you should focus on the text and the ideas they present, what effects they had, and the purpose of the writer (dickens in this case) including whatever it may be.

so you could maybe write something like this: when scrooge declares in stave 5, "i am as light as a feather," dickens uses employs the metaphor to represent both physical and spiritual liberation. (insert analysis of language and its effects) some later thinkers have speculated that the human soul might have substance - famously connected to the "21 grams" theory of dr. duncan macdougall - but dickens instead uses 'lightness' to symbolise moral release rather than physical change. in platonic terms, scrooge's transformation reflects the purification of the appetitive part of the soul, as he frees himself from greed and selfish desire. for victorian readers, this metaphor would reinforce dickens's message that redemption and generosity bring not only moral but emotional liberation.

essentially always link to the focus of the question and dont stray too far away, but i love that you're expanding your knowledge on your set texts!

do you have any tips for revising business edexcel gcse, and were there any particular parts you found difficult like memorising formula?
also i struggle a lot with 9/12 Marker marker evaluation and for getting context into my answers )for 6 markers too). general rule of thumb i used was 1 use context per strand of analysis but do you recommend anything

hi!!

for revising business i did the same for re, i had a huge document with advantages and disadvantages of each subtopic so i always had arguments to talk about in my 3,6,9, and 12 markers. i found having these most difficult so i made sure i memorised these using blurting and online flashcards! i would share them if i could but they were on my school account and i no longer have access to them :<

with those 9 and 12 markers i had the peach peach ajim structure - point evidence analysis context and however, where they would be both for arguments or one for and one against argument. for 9 markers make sure you choose ONE option and only talk about that! you could mention the second option in your howevers, but examiners tend to like students to focus on one option (or thats what i got told by my teacher). ajim would be the conclusion, Answer the question (which option etc.) Justify, 'It depends on..' and 'Most importantly...'.

business was horrid for me ngl since my teacher left after teaching us paper 1 and we had a horrible substitute teacher, but i wish the best for you!! < 33

hello and thank you! first things first, yes i understand that i had a few incorrect factual statement, however the matter where you said to not make it a bulk and main part of essay i was wondering, as i have made my own paragraph structure PCETAZA CETAZAL WL (Point, context, evidence, technique, zoom, analysis, context, evidence, technique, analysis, zoom, analysis, writers intentions, link) i have been using this strucutre and have been getting about 7-9 so far. i write as in the first bit i have an evidence point and analysis, then on a question like ACC where it mentions to speak about the entire play the second quote would be about the entire playand not the extract and would simply reinforce the point of the first bit, so how im thinking is that i could make it (the point of 21 grams and platos theory) a main subpoint to reinforce the first quotation and point, or would that not work as you said 'dickens probably wasn’t drawing directly on platonic philosophy, and the examiner might think its quite speculative.'. However would examiners not look for concept and anlaysis, or would this fit more on context marks.

Thank you for replying and i would appreciate if you replied again.

no worries and not long at all!!
content wise my teacher had summary sheets which i put into gizmo and quizlet and generated flashcards from. tbh i did sort of neglect re so i wasnt consistent with them but i visited them every so often. also we'd get check lists which were based off the spec and for each subpoint id write down 4 for arguments and 4 against arguments, all backed up by quotes and different religions. that way, i basically had for and against arguments for any prompt they could give whether it be for the 12 markers or 4-5 markers. for 12 markers you should also have a structure, i think that helped me out sm!! i dont remember mine exactly but im pretty sure ur teacher should've given you one, but mine was something like having 2 for argument paragraphs (which were pretty short ngl) with quotes and where the quote was from, like 1-2 sentences about if this side was strong or weak, and repeat for the against arguements, alongside a short conclusion which introduced my own point of view backed up with evidence (if i had time lol).
with timing, i personally read the 12 markers, jotted some of the for and against arguments i previously mentioned next to the statements and did the questions. id say prioritise easy marks that you know you'll get, then the 12 markers because you could lose a lot of marks, and then the other questions which i wasnt so sure about.
also dw you still have time! treat your mocks like the real thing, i know it sounds cliche but i genuinely wish i took mocks a little more seriously because theyre basically conditioning you to the same environment as actual gcse exams, and its really good practice. i didnt have a specific study schedule but i do wish i didnt leave most of re last minute.
just to note i i did get extra time, so the timings thing wont be the same but i did end up missing out on a few questions (woops...) but still got a 9, so dont be too worked up over it!! but then again dont get complacent.
im assuming you do aqa, and i just checked their website and it looks like theyve changed up some of the structure so my tips may not be specifically tailored to their new style but i hope it helps regardless!! sorry for the long msg 😞

TYSMMM imma steal your quizlet cards to revise from since there's a test next week, what do you search up to get them (I do Christianity and Islam)? tyy!!

sorry this is so late, but what are your tips for biology, specifically the 6 markers? I find it really boring and don't tend to do great in my tests. also how do you avoid burnout?
