Uk university home student status

Hello everyone,

I have a complex situation regarding my eligibility for Home Student fee status.

Here’s a summary of my background: Nationality: I am a British citizen by descent, holding a British passport since birth. My dad is British as well.

Residency History: I was born and raised in China, living there with my mother until I was 16.

Move to the UK: I first arrived in the UK on 24th July 2023 to begin my SQA higher which I completed in 2025.

Current Status:I am currently on a gap year and plan to apply for university entry in September 2026.

My Core Question:

I understand that to qualify for Home Student fee status, you typically need to have been "ordinarily resident" in the UK for the full three years preceding the first day of your course.

Given that my course would start on, for example, 1st September 2026, will my period of residence from 24th July 2023 until that date be considered sufficient to meet the three-year requirement?

Specifically:

1. Does the definition of "ordinary residence" fully include time spent in the UK for the primary purpose of secondary education (Sixth Form)?
2. Are there any specific pitfalls or additional evidence I should be prepared to provide, given that I was a minor when I moved here and my initial reason for moving was education?

Additionally: my dad worked in Shanghai when I was born, and he went to a lots countries for jobs. Until 2021 he went back to the uk and work in a lot of places (he really like to change his job…) so when I moved to the uk we lived together till now. So can this be an evidence that I’m not here just for education but live?

Thank you so much for your time and any guidance you can offer.
Hi there,

Its definitely worth finding out what fee status you'll be eligible for so its good to see you're thinking about this early.

This isn't really the kind of thing we can advise on on here, because different unis have subtly different criteria on how they make fee status decisions. Therefore the best way to get the answers you need will be either email or call up the admissions teams of the unis you're interested in applying to, to see if they can offer guidance on your situation - be prepared to let them know what kind of visa you/your parents have.

Unis will also have something on their website about how they decide fee status so this could be worth a look too. Often however, unis will be unable to decide on your fee status until you've applied so be prepared for them to say this - nevertheless it is still worth asking!

Apologies we couldn't be of more help! - best of luck 🙂

Fee status is complicated and its not possible for anyone to give you a definite answer to this as it will depend entirely on your personal circumstances, the reason your family is/was abroad, if they still have a property in the UK, etc, etc.

Here are the basic rules - Student fee status | Students - UCL University College London - but its up to each Uni how they interpret these rules. All you can do is apply and wait for Unis to ask you for more information, document copies etc, and then make their decision. They will not asses your fee status in advance of receiving your application.

How do universities consider applications from students to be settled after application and before school starts? I understand universities are free to interpret the rules. So the options might include the followings?

1.

international student offer with conditions: pay international fees and no changes until graduation

2.

international student offer but able to change to home after settlement

3.

home student offer with conditions: settled status before school starts

Only one university asked me to complete a fee status questionnaire shortly after receiving my application.
