Hiya!

I completely understand how you feel, starting an essay like this can be tricky, especially if it’s your first time writing one on such a broad topic. When I had essay based assignments, I found it helpful to start by going back through my lecture notes and recordings to remind myself of the key ideas discussed in class. I would also search for key terms in the library database and on Google Scholar. This helped me build a basic understanding of the topic and find some solid academic sources to reference and once I had a bit more background knowledge, I started jotting down a few initial arguments and questions.

Here are a few steps that might help you get started too:

1.

Review your lecture materials - go back through notes, slides, or recordings to remind yourself of any theories, examples, or readings relevant to public trust in science.

2.

Do some targeted reading - search for recent journal articles or review papers on similar topics. Your university library, Google Scholar and most importantly your module reading list are great starting points.

3.

Plan your structure early - outline your essay with an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion.

4.

Reach out for support - you can always reach out to your lecturer for clarification on the essay question or contact the library for help with finding credible sources and structure etc.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

Hi @diverse-constabl

I hope you are well! It can be very tricky to start writing an essay especially if you have never done one before. I was the same in my first year when I got given essays to write, I would spend ages just staring at the question and a blank page not having a clue what to start with.

Some advice for you would be to get in touch with someone that will be able to help and guide you in the right direction. This could be the lecturer, a friend or peer, or I know at LJMU they offer student support teams who you can book appointments with and sit down to talk to them about assignments or anything you need help with! It might be worth a look to see if your uni offers something similar as it would definitely benefit you!

Also, start off with lots of research. You do not have to start writing the essay straight away. By doing research you will become a lot more familiar with the topic and when you do come to start writing the essay, you will find that the sentences start to flow more easily. Google scholar is an excellent platform to use for research and can also assist you with references.

I hope this response has helped you slightly, let me know if you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help!

Hi there!

I'm not sure about this exact topic, but I thought I could help out with a few ideas on where to start and where to get help if you are struggling.

Firstly, I would look through all of your lecture slides and see if there is any information on there which might help you out with where to start. Or, look over the assessment brief and marking rubric again as this should help out too, and then start to make a rough plan (it doesn't have to be the best) but will help you find a stating point.

You can look on places like google scholar, JSTOR and also look through the reading lists as you will find useful things on here too. If you find a good journal article on Google Scholar, you can look who has cited it too as you can often find more helpful articles through here. Also using BBC News, the Guardian are helpful too. Just avoid places like Wikipedia or informal blogs as these can be quite unreliable.

Make sure you are asking your lecturer anything you don't understand too. They are there to help you and will take the time to look over things or answer your questions if you need help.

Talking to your peers is a good idea too as they might know more or might understand a little bit more about the topic which could help give you a starting point.

Have a look on your E-library too, as sometimes at Hallam they have classes where you can learn how to do critical writing, how to reference etc so this could also really help you out if your uni has something similar!

I hope some of this helps,
