Is further maths essential for top unis ?

Hi. I have just started my a levels and I chose further maths and maths with two other subjects but I’m currently struggling in maths and further maths which is like signalling me to drop further maths so I can focus more on maths . But one thing stopping me from doing that is the question, do all top unis that are doing courses like economics or finance or actuarial sci do they like need need fm. Like what if I do terrible in further maths would they still prefer me? I don’t know what to do . I want to go to a top university but what am I supposed to do. If I drop further maths I may get good grades in other subjects but unis won’t prefer me . Is that true for all other unis like Ik about lse but what about the others . Thanks guys for the help .

For Economics Undergraduate courses:

Oxbridge only requires Maths to A-Level (At A or A*)

London School of Economics and Political Science says FM is desirable, but it's not required

Generally, you'd be fine dropping it if you get good grades in all your other subjects. FM is nice, but not a hard requirement for these Uni's.

Good luck!!

Hi @Shahahah

This really depends on the course you are going for. I recommend taking a look at the various courses you may be interested in, alongside the different unis. On the course pages, there will be information about their grade requirements. Some courses may require or strongly recommend it, but if your looking at courses where maths is no essential, then not doing FM should not be an issue.

It's important to remember universities will prefer to see three good A-level grades, over mediocre grades plus FM. I recommend talking with your teacher if dropping the subject is the right step for the course you wish to do.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions 😊,

Unis have to be totally upfront and honest about their entry requirements and any required or preferred subjects. If they say they don't want/prefer FM then you will be fine. The only thing to be aware of is that some Uni - only some - will expect you to have done FM if your school offers it, but again they will state this online.

Thank you so much for your reply. Like you said some unis say it’s desirable but not a requirement but in a way it shows they mainly take students that have done FM like they want you to take it but they won’t say it’s a requirement. So I fear if I drop FM I won’t get into any good uni for courses like Economics or actuarial science kind of thing.

Hi, thank you so much for the reply. I want to do a course like economics or actuarial science to which most unis say it’s highly desirable and I have noted they don’t say it’s a requirement but indirectly it is . So I’m just confused that if I do drop FM I will have a lower chance of getting into any good uni but if I take it I may fail really badly and also what if my other subjects also get affected by this . So I’m really struggling to decide if I should keep this or not . My teachers did advise me to drop it since I’m not getting good grades but what if I can improve later and what if if I drop this I have no chance of getting into a good uni. This is such a hard decision .

Yep that’s the thing all the unis I have looked at prefer FM but I just don’t know if I should keep it even if my grades may turn out to be terrible.
