Best courses for me

Hi,

I’m a current level 4 media/art student at college and have been looking for uni courses next year and am a bit stuck on what sort of course would be best suited for me.

My dream job is making visuals for live performances/concerts. So far I’ve looked into motion graphics at Nottingham Trent but I don’t know if it’s the most suitable for me.

I primarily work in after effects and have been dabbling in touch designer and would love to experiment with 3D elements too. I’ve done projection mapping, which I’ve very much enjoyed.

If I could have some recommendations (outside London if possible but will consider) it’d be much appreciated as I’m kind of stuck.

Many thanks
Hi @LJTY4,

It's great that you have a career in mind already - this can really help you narrow down your choices and be pragmatic about your choice of course. It may be worth exploring our Event Production BSc course as well - this course has a practical focus on sound, video and lighting production for events.

One of the best ways to support your research is often by attending any open days at Universities you're interested in. These can be a great opportunity to explore facilities and have in depth conversations with current students and staff - helpful in narrowing down if a course provides everything you're after, as well as discovering new courses you might not have seen before. If you wanted to learn more about Motion Graphics or Event Production at NTU, our next open day is the 15th of November - we'd love to see you there!

I hope this helps, if you have any questions for us at NTU let us know!

If you like graphic design, and you'd be happy designing books/packaging/campaigns etc - as well as motion work, then a general degree in Graphic Design would be worth considering. Many of the more forward-thinking courses do a lot of motion design.

However, it might be that a specialist motion design course is right for you. If this kind of stuff https://motionographer.com/ excites you, it might be the right direction for you. It'll be a lot more technical.

Hi,

I’ve looked at the modules and this seems too heavily technical for me, but thank you for the suggestion!

Hi @LJTY4

It's great that you have a strong idea of what you want to do in the future and now just need to figure out how to get there.

I have a post about how to find a course and make a uni decision. Tips on Making a University Choice - The Student Room This might be helpful to read.

There are also lots of great courses at Kingston that might be of interest to you, although it is in Greater London it is not in central London, so slightly cheaper and much calmer.
Creative and Cultural Industries: Events and Experiences Design BA (Hons) | Kingston University London
Creative and Cultural Industries: Art Direction BA (Hons) | Kingston University London
Undergraduate courses | Kingston University London

If you want to find out more about Kingston don't hesitate to ask questions. I will link a few posts that might help you get an idea of what it is like.

I hope this helps!

Hello! Having a clear career path at this stage is great because it can help you narrow down your options and make sensible course selections. Given that you are already working with After Effects and investigating TouchDesigner and projection mapping, it's wonderful to see your interest in producing visuals for live performances and concerts. One course that came to mind is UAL’s creative computing course which combines technology, coding, and creative digital practice. Your interest in live visual work seems to be a perfect fit for this program, which is intended for the digital creative industries and would let you experiment with interactive media and computational technologies.

You can find more about the course here: https://www.arts.ac.uk/subjects/creative-computing/undergraduate/bsc-hons-creative-computing

Another course that came to mind is Theatre and Performance Design. I can speak from personal experience as a student at Wimbledon College of Arts regarding this course, which may be a great fit to you. This course explores set and visual design with a strong emphasis on both practical skills and conceptual development, focusing on the creative design side of theatre and live performance. You have the opportunity to learn how to create striking visual environments for live performances. Your interest in projection mapping and live visuals for concerts might be a great fit for this practical, theater-focused approach.

You can find more about the course here: https://www.arts.ac.uk/subjects/performance-and-design-for-theatre-and-screen/undergraduate/ba-hons-theatre-and-performance-design-wimbledon

There are numerous opportunities at UAL for live briefs, partnerships, and events that put students in direct contact with the live performance and creative industries. You could work with students from various backgrounds to advance your creative ideas because the encouraging atmosphere promotes interdisciplinary projects.

Please get in touch if you have any more questions on the course / student life! I wish you all the best in your application and preparation process! I hope your search for a course goes well!
