Struggling to choose: UEA or Newcastle Pharmacy?

I’m thinking about my uni applications and stuck between UEA and Newcastle for Pharmacy. Any honest advice for someone who likes green spaces, friendly community, but wants a respected uni? I’d love to hear from current or past students what special perks or unique things made you pick your uni or love it there?

Hey there!

Newcastle Graduate here in Biomedical Science however had multiple friends who studied Pharmacy! My friends really enjoyed the Pharmacy degree because the cohort of students were really closed and friendly. They would often study together and hang out outside of lectures which is nice! In terms of our campus, personally I think it's the best of both worlds!

We have nice mix of High-Spec buildings and old traditional building cross campus. We're a campus-city based University meaning that both the Newcastle University campus and Newcastle City Centre is very close (30 second walk!) and this is great when you need to grab something in a break between lecture, or go for a bite to eat with coursemates!

We have loads of public transport links whether thats a bus or a metro (type of train) which can take you to either a stunning sea side or vibrant country/Forest area. Lots of students, including myself go to the seaside on the weekend to chill out! You can find loads of little markets on across the city such as Ouseburn market or Tynemouth Market!

Newcastle University is a founding member of the Russel Group - This means that all of the lectures/clinicians who are teaching you are often world-leaders in their field and are undertaking their own research which students can get invovled with! One of my friends looked at how to make the synthesis of a drug more sustainable and efficient! Since it's a Russel Group University this means that it has other things like bursaries, more funding oppourtunities which lead to world class facilities! Also our Pharmacy course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council!

One of the reasons I went to Newcastle was because of how friendly the students were but also the city when I went on an open day! They have just been voted Number 1 in 'Student Life' - This means that students have voted them highly in things such as their affordabiltiy (top 5 affordable cities), saftey, friendiness and their range of student social spaces and events!

These are some information / experiences that I or my friends had whilst studying here! Hopefully it has been of some use 😁My best piece of advice would be that it is your decision and a good way to navigate that would be through attending something like an Open Day! This would give you first hand experience of the Universities and allow you to better weigh up your options!

Wishing you the best!
