Post graduation prospects

Currently in my third and final year of mechanical engineering and it really has flown by, especially second year. As much as I'm trying to focus on my assignments and exams, I do have that worry playing in the back of my mind about what to do after I graduate, in terms of what kind of career path I want to go down. I was just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me here and was also looking for advice and suggestions about what i should do, come July. In terms of my interests, I know it sounds very shallow, but id like to get into a high paying career and dont really mind if I'm sat behind a desk or working with my hands. I understand I'm not gonna be starting on 50k but I want to pursue something that has a lot of potential income wise. Thanks

I (old git mature student) worked with a bunch of mechanical engineers in a previous career, but at the lower end of the skills market (they were usually NVQ3 qualified rather than degree qualified). My experience was split across factories and power generation. Even the basic-level operatives earned very well, but the lower they were, the more insecure their employment was and the worse their conditions were (lots of travel, often self-employed, long shifts, few breaks).

The senior staff members with the biggest salaries and the best conditions in those places mixed knowledge as skilled operatives with management skills, either as project managers, safety managers or personnel managers.

Obviously if you’re just trying to break into work, get whatever you can, but I’d say look for ways to add vocational certifications and experience in safety and management to the experience you’re getting. It might not be an instant route to fame and fortune, but you can do pretty well if you take the right approach.
