Chances of getting into EEE without physics

Hi, I’m thinking of doing EEE at university but am having second thoughts about actually applying in my current circumstances.
ABB predicted grades in Business, Maths ,CS
876666543 at GCSE.
Essentially, I think that my lack of physics and weaker GCSEs put me in a bad position. I feel I have a relatively strong PS with multiple relevant projects and work experience; however, I just wanted brutal opinions on how realistic my choices of Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham, and Manchester FY would be of receiving an offer. I notice all these only need maths and can have an extra science where CS is accepted, so essentially, how likely am I to get an offer?
I feel I can maybe also get my predicted up to AAA, but how realistic and likely would I be to get an offer in my current position?

Thanks for any replies.

Hi there @harris135 :hello:

It's great to hear that you are interested in studying with us here at the University of Nottingham!

For our EEE course, we require ABB including Maths and one of electronics, computer science, physics, chemistry, biology, further mathematics, design and technology: systems control or design technology: design engineering. Our GCSE requirement is English at grade 4 (C). You are studying subjects that meet our entry requirements, so our Admissions team would consider an application from you.

Please do get in touch with us if you have any further questions, and we would be happy to liaise with our Admissions team on your behalf 🙂

I hope this helps!

Unis have to entirely up front and honest about entry requirements - no hidden information. If they state on the website that Physics is not required or preferred for their degree, that is what they mean. Apply.

Hi @harris135

For our EEE course we require a minimum 104 UTP including Maths A-Level only, and GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above. So your Level 3 predicted grades would be fine and providing you meet the GCSE requirement, you would be welcome to apply. Take a look at the course webpage here: BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering. We also offer this as an integrated masters: MEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering which requires a minimum 112 UTP including Maths. And there is a new EEE course available that may be of interest: BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering and AI, which has the same entry requirements as the BEng EEE course.

If you aren't already, you might be interested in coming to our upcoming Undergraduate Open Day on 22nd November 2025, You will be able to speak with the engineering academics, tour the labs, speak with our Admissions team, visit the Student Life Fair, look at accommodation etc, and much more. You can book your place here.

If you would like to discuss the entry requirements further or have questions about the courses, you're welcome to contact our Course Enquiries team on 0161 247 6969 or at [email protected].

Hope this helps,
Mel 😊

Hi harris135, 👋

It's great to hear you are interested in EEE at Sheff, my partner did his degree here in Chemical Engineering and absolutely loved it. The Engineering faculty is great and has so many supportive and friendly staff. Plus the specialist Diamond building has top of the line equipment made entirely for engineering students, it also has independent study spaces and a great cafe, that I often use!

I understand your concerns about grades but, from both my own and my partner's experience, we have found the university to be lenient when it comes to grades if you firm them as your top choice. My partner (ChemEng) and I (English Literature) both firmed Sheffield and, even though we both got slightly lower than expected grades at A-Level, we were still offered a place!

The webpage doesn't appear to mention certain grades for GCSE and it only asks for one science (which you have with your CS course!). If the course required you to have A-Level grade knowledge of physics, they would put it as an option. But the fact that they don't, suggests the course is entry-level enough to those who did not take it at A-Level, and will thus include the relevant learning in modules on the uni course itself.

I would say definitely go for it, as, like I said, I didn't meet my grade requirements but I was still offered a space and I am so glad I chose Sheffield. I love the university campus, course, staff and other students and decided to stay on for my masters and now I'm back for my PhD. 😀

If you have any other questions about Sheffield, do let me know and I'd be happy to help. Alternatively, you can chat to one of our current EEE students for any course/application specific questions here.

Good luck with your decision making and exams!

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😃
