Newcastle Uni- modern languages

Hi!
I'm currently studying Spanish A-level and am looking to continue it at uni. I was looking at Newcastle and saw there were different courses I thought looked good like Modern Languages and Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting.

I was wondering if anyone whose previously studied these courses or is studying them have any input in how they find the courses!

Many Thanks

Hi Eilidhmoyes,

Studying a language at University can be amazing! It can help you build so many skills whilst opening so many graduate oppourtunities! I think whats also great is that you can study them in any capacity at University, whether you want to take a degree in a language such as Modern Languages course (Great Shout 😁) or you want to take it along side another subject.

In terms of what we offer:

1 - Modern Languages:

This is the oppourtunity to take up to 3 languages in a degree that mixes culture, politics history and more! It's a great way to keep your options open and learn new lanaguges along side one you might be famililar with.

2 - Combined honours / Degrees with language elements in:

Combined Honours allows you to merge up to 3 degrees together by taking modules from up. Here at Newcastle we give students up to 22 different subjects to choose from ranging from subjects like Law and Business to others such as Spanish, Portuguese or Japanese. This could be a great way to expand your subject range whilst still carrying on Spanish!

Another similar option is a degree which has a language element within it. For example, our International Business Management course in which you will learn the skills to manage and navigate the business world whilst also developing a proficiency in a language!

3 - University Wide Language Program (UWLP):

If you chose to take a degree that didnt include a language dont worry! Here at Newcastle we offer all students access to the UWLP which comes in two aspects. You could choose to self-study a language and have so many facilities, software and resources to do so! OR you could undertake language classes for free alongside your degree. There are 12 different langauges to choose from in which you would get would gain a qualification and can take at any level!

Quite the overload of information! However, I hope this has helped! To speak to our current students you could come down to our Open Day happening on the 22nd of November, here you could find out more about the course and oppoutunities!

Wishing you the best!

Go to the Open Day. There will be presentations about the structure and content of each course, and you can just chat informally with current students. Undergraduate Open Days | Study With Us | Newcastle University
