Was invited to assessment centre - 5 mins later, was told not eligible

Hey everyone, need some advice on a confusing recruitment situation.

I applied to what I thought was a graduate scheme at a major bank (wealth management division). The role was titled something like "X Management - Internship" but the ENTIRE job description discussed the graduate programme - entry requirements like needing a 2:1, career progression, long-term development, etc. There was literally no mention of it being for penultimate years only.

So I applied as a final year student expecting to join as a grad in summer 2026. Did the whole application, passed the video interview stage, got a call this morning inviting me to an AC. Then 5 mins later, another call asking to confirm my graduation date, and suddenly I'm told I'm ineligible because it's actually an internship for penultimate years. They told me I should apply to the grad scheme instead - even though I genuinely thought that's what I'd been applying to all along!

I've drafted an email to their early talent team explaining the confusion and asking if they can transfer my application to the actual grad scheme rather than making me restart the whole process. I've already done all the assessments and was literally about to go to AC.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do you think they're likely to accommodate a transfer, or am I going to have to start from scratch? Feels a bit unfair given how misleading the job description was.

Any advice appreciated!

I've never heard of such a situation, but if such the case, that's a major oversight on HR's part and I do hope they transfer your application to the appropriate scheme. Let us know how the situation evolved!

Unfortunately, not the outcome I was hoping for! Heard back from the Global Head of Early Talent and they're saying they can't transfer applications between programmes due to a "one application per campaign" policy.

Even though one of their managers literally confirmed that the advert I applied through "seems to be the advert for our graduate programme," they're still making me withdraw and reapply from scratch. Lose all my progress through the assessments and the AC invite.

Their response was very polite but basically "we appreciate your enthusiasm but those are the rules, please reapply." No acknowledgment that their misleading job description caused this whole mess in the first place. They've now taken down the original job posting lol.

Bit gutted tbh as I was literally about to go to AC, but I guess that's recruitment for you. Going to withdraw and reapply as instructed - they've said if the system auto-rejects it as a duplicate they'll reactivate it, so at least there's that.

Moral of the story: always double and triple check whether something says "internship" or "graduate scheme" even if the description makes zero sense!

Thanks for the support though, appreciate it. I've also never heard of a situation like this.

That sucks, at least they're giving you a second chance to reapply so not everything was lost. Good luck!
