Of course. My friend applied with similar grades and did fine. The importance of your GCSEs in your application depends on what uni you want to go to. E.g KCL, Birmingham, Leicester, Oxford and many others will score/ look at your gcses. Many universities will only look at your gcses to see whether you meet minimum requirements such as Manchester, UCL etc and no further. As long as your 5 isnt in english language or maths, you will be fine for these. good luck with year 12!

Also forgot to mention, but if youre in year 12 (im assuming by the date of this post?) the only thing i would focus on is getting work experience if possible, and your a levels and ucat in the summer. Dont stress about your gcses

Are you in year 12? Have you got a local hospital that you could try email or search up online to see if they have volunteering programmes for young people? If you find something, contact the hospital to ask about it- if not, just see if you can find an email/ smt to email. Try ask your teachers if they know about any volunteering at hospital/ how to access it. Shadowing doctors can be harder, some hospitals can do that too- but i know its quite difficult to get hands on. Many universities know this too! So even reaching out to a care home or something care related, asking to help around would be great.

I do think asking your local hospital/ researching about opportunities is the best way to go at the moment. Other opportunities may present themsleves as the year goes on:smile:

Definitely do try and maybe join a club of some kind, something you enjoy and can work in a team in. E.g debating society, subject extension clubs etc. i am part of my sustainability commitee at school- this gives you something to talk about when interview season comes round! Ive found it very helpful to give me stuff to talk about, so i highly recommend joining a club of some kind!!

Any qs do pls let me know!!

2026 entry requirements for each UK Medical School - A levels and UKCAT are far more important than your GSCE grades - UK medical school entry requirements - Medical Schools Council

If you are now in Year 12, you may find some of these upcoming webinars etc from the Uni of Leicester useful - see under 'Virtual Events' - Outreach | Leicester Medical School | University of Leicester

And this online free course from Uni of Glasgow - Applying for Medical School - Online Course - FutureLearn

Have you tried emailing your local hospital(s) themselves/ checking for any young person programmes or volunteering opportunities they may have? Most sign up season starts now.

Finding some medicine work experience can be frustrating and unfair like this I’m afraid. Most people get work experience from a family friend etc.

I do know however, many of my friends who knew nobody would email around even 50 different care homes, GP etc places asking for an opportunity, until they got one. Do you live near a teaching hospital? Search for the teaching hospitals in your area. Otherwise you’ll just have to keep emailing until someone responds. My friend did it for months until they got one.

Many medical schools are aware of the difficulty of gaining experience if you don’t know anyone from the medical field, so even if it is something care related, it will still help.

For now, focus on clubs and keeping grades up. It took me ages until I found work experience too- I did most of mine February time and proper doctor shadowing right before my end of years in year 12.

But honestly don’t be too worried.

Hope this helped:smile:
