Best univerisities for geophysics?

I'm a current Year 13 student studying Further Maths, Maths, Geography and Physics. I'm interested in studying Geophysics at University next year, and while I have certain universities in mind such as the University of Edinburgh, University College London, Imperial College, University of Leeds and Durham University, I was wondering what everyones opinions where? What universities are the best for this course?

Do these choices cover a range of different grade requirements, and do you have an obvious lower grade Insurance choice?

Do these choices include any placement years or study abroad - these add enormously to your graduate CV, and overseas experience is especially important for something like Geophys.

Have you been to Open Days at any of these Unis, have you found out the structure of each course and what makes each one subtly different, did you find out what their graduates have gone on to do? Did you like each Uni environment, did it feel 'comfortable', did you like the city/town, and how expensive are private rents for Year 2 onwards, etc?

No-one else can tell you where you will be happiest, or the most suitable course for your individual interests and needs. Making these choices is a very individual and personal decision. Just remember that you do not have to submit your application until January - so don't panic if it takes you more time than others to feel confident about your choices, it isn't a race.

Hey I'm in y13 and also applying for geophysics (and have never met anybody else applying)! Based of the QS rankings Leeds is the best followed by Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh and then Durham. Even though geophysics is already very specialised certain Unis have specialities like I know Leeds has COMET (center of modelling earthquakes volcanoes and techtonics) but all 5 you have mentioned are very good, have a look at the modules available, the size of the departement if that matters to you, what sort of things are available for the final year project and what the city is like for you!

Cambridge?

cambridge only offer natural sciences, and only allow you to specialise in earth sciences later on in your degree. you would have to study other subjects too for at least the first few years

Studying physics and math the first year is 100% relevant to geophysics and chemistry is also somewhat relevant. A first year course load of maths, earth science, physics, and chemistry isn't too far from a dedicated geophysics course. In the second year, you can take 1 maths modules + both earth science modules or 1 physics module + 2 earth science modules to keep things even more relevant.

I know it is relevant, it's just isn't what I want to do - geophysics courses sound more interesting to me

Even in a pure geophysics degree, you will need to take math and physics courses, FYI

University College London (UCL)

Imperial College London

University of Leeds

Durham University

University of Southampton

University of Aberdeen

University of Edinburgh

University of Oxford (Earth Sciences with geophysics modules)

University of Cambridge (Earth Sciences with geophysics focus available)

University of Liverpool

If you want, I can also give you a shortlist specifically for undergraduate or masters.
