Is medicine work experience good enough for biomedical sciences/engineering?

Hey everyone,

I’m planning to apply for Biomedical Sciences. I know that work experience isn’t as big of a requirement as it is for Medicine, but I figured it’s still worth doing, especially for the more competitive universities.

I’m currently on a gap year. Last year, I was going to apply for Medicine but realised it’s not actually something I want to do. Because of that, all my work experience so far is medical-related. I’ve worked in the PAU, inpatient and outpatient sectors, and also gained experience at a recovery centre and a memory assessment unit for patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

I was wondering if this experience could still be relevant to Biomedical Sciences, or if it would be better to seek out additional experience specifically in areas like pathology, since it’s more closely related to the course. At the moment, I’ve only managed to secure a tour around the pathology department, proper work experience placements there don’t start until next year. Also if there are any additional information that could help boost my application I would greatly appreciate it

Hey, I currently do biomed and I think the current work experience already puts you as a strong candidate even for the top unis!! But as you are on your gap I would definitely recommend getting extra work experience in! I would research about the biomed course for the unis you want to apply and work on your personal statement depending on that!

Dent-turned-chemical engineering applicant here 😁

My work experience was initially dentistry focused (week in dental practice, week in hospital). Didn't get in last year after interviews - figured out I never was sure about dent anyway and applied for ChemE in my gap year. Didn't do any directly relevant work experience, continued with volunteering and did extra reading now have received 2/5 offers.

For biomedical sciences/biomedical engineering (which is much closer to med than my degree) I'd assume you're fine as long as you make it relevant to the course in your PS.
