How to apply for placement year?

Hi,

University of Staffordshire is my firm choice for 2026. I was thinking about doing Games Design & Programming. I saw you do a placement year but when I go on UCAS it does not appear. How do I apply for a placement year?

Thanks
Dylan

If you visit the Computer Games Design and Programming page on the University of Staffordshire web site, here, you will note that it defaults "Choose a study option" to "Full-time" and shows the UCAS code as "I646". However, if you change the study option to "Full-time, with a placement year" then the UCAS code changes to "I647".

So when you complete your UCAS application, ensure you apply for "I647". (That code starts with a letter "I", by the way, not a digit "1".)

If you've already applied, just contact the admissions team and asked to be switched to "I647".

Usually, most students will begin the application for the placement year by visiting their university's careers or placement office. You will need to tidy up your CV, write a bespoke cover letter, and apply directly to organisations with placements relevant to your discipline. The earlier the better, but it is a good idea to look for positions around the start of your course, alongside gathering support and resources from your tutor or careers advisor.

Hi Dylan!
I'm Aura, a rep from the University of Staffordshire studying Computer Science and running the Staffs Computing Society (working with departments such as Games, Computing, Careers, Placements and Employability.) I can vouch that the Games department are brilliant, even having just recently released their own arcades to showcase student work.

Your stated course can be found by checking the link https://www.staffs.ac.uk/course/computer-games-design-programming-bsc

There are various options to choose from including:
Full Time (UCAS Code 1646), 3 years total.
Full Time with Foundation Year (UCAS Code I648), 4 years total.
Full Time with Placement Year (UCAS Code I647), 4 years total.
Part-Time (between 4-9 years)

Have you tried to choose the option I647 directly via the link or code via UCAS? If that does not work, do not threat! Staffs gives students the possibility to change directly into a placement year upon successfully securing a role in their second year of University. This can be done once enrolled at any time via our evision platform or by contacting course leaders directly. This was the case for me, as I initially applied for a 3 year course but later secured a role.

Hope this is useful and do let me know if that works! Thanks,
Aura (University of Staffordshire Rep.)
