Would research on sleep or diet be good for a biomedical science welshbacc project?

Im currently behind on welshbacc but im drafting up my personal statement. I need to mention what i am doing for my welshbacc project and im struggling to decide what to choose. Would researching sleep and its effects on educational attainment a good project idea? My only other idea is to do something based on diet/caffeine and physical attainment in a gym setting. Id prefer these as i think itd be easier for me to gain primary research on these. Are these good enough for my personal statement? If so, which would be better?

Hello! Both of your ideas sound really strong and either could work really well for your welsh Bacc project and your personal statement, depending on how you link it to your future course of interests.

Researching sleep and its effects on education attainment would be a great choice if you're interested in psychology, health or education. It's a topic that's easy to gather primary data and there's plenty of research out there to support your analysis. The diet/caffeine physical attainment idea is equally interesting particularly if you're more drawn to sport biology or health sciences. I would advise including in your PS how you reflect on the project what you learned about research methods, data interpretation or how science applies to real life.

Hi there,

Both themes can work for a biomedical statement. Rather than suggesting one for you, use these questions to decide: can you run it quickly, is it low risk and ethical, can you collect primary data easily, are the outcomes measurable, and can you analyse with basic stats?

Write a clear hypothesis, define variables you can control, plan consent and anonymised data, and think about likely confounders and how you will report limits. Ask yourself: what data can I get in two weeks, what would a meaningful result look like, and what skills will I be able to reflect on in my statement. Whichever idea scores highest on speed, safety, feasibility, and clarity is the right choice.

Best,
Daniel
