Missing workshops due to illness — what’s the right process?

Hi everyone,
I’m a first-year international student and I’ve been feeling really unwell since yesterday I’ve been throwing up and can’t make it to my workshops. I know Durham has a self-certification of absence form, but I read that it should be submitted after you’ve recovered, once you know how many days you’ve missed.
My question is: since attendance is mandatory for workshops (and it’s tracked through the QR codes), should I still email my professors now to let them know I’m sick, or is it fine to just fill out the self-certification form once I’m better?
I just don’t want to get in any sort of trouble for visa or attendance reasons. Would really appreciate any advice thank you!

Hi! Don’t worry too much, you’re doing the right thing by completing the self-certification form after you have recovered to cover the days you’ve missed, so that is fine.
There would be no harm in also emailing your lecturers or workshop leaders now to let them know you’re unwell. You can just mention that you’re unwell and will submit the self-cert form once you’re better.

However, try to focus on getting better as a priority and then you can always complete the form after.

Wishing you a speedy recovery! 😊

Yes I would just email them (cc your personal tutor if you're really concerned) to let them know. You can fill any forms in afterwards.

Worst case scenario they say "don't worry about it just submit the form later", but I imagine most lecturers probably like to know in advance if students are going to miss a timetabled session.
