Stuck between social careers and subjects! 🤔

I'm interested in lots of social jobs and subjects—marketing, accounting, business, management, journalism, law, psychology and sociology. For uni, how did you choose between similar people-focused courses, and do you regret your choice?

Accounting....?

The only career less social than accountancy that I can think of is cutting the grass in a graveyard.

Hiya Lovely

That’s such a relatable dilemma, whilst the subjects I was struggling to pick between weren't really social subject I can still relate to that dilemma. All those subjects you've mentioned link together in different ways and appeal to people who like understanding and working with others.
One thing that really helped me when deciding was thinking less about the subject itself and more about the environment I could see myself working in afterwards. For example, would you rather be in a fast-paced corporate setting, a more people-facing support role, or something research/writing-based? Spoiler alert for me it was the labs.

Going to open days was also super useful getting a feel for the style of each course (how practical vs. theoretical it is, how much group work there is, etc.) can make a big difference. We ourselves are going to be having our open day soon DMU OPEN DAY. I can't stress enough how important open days were for me.

Last piece of advice you might even want to look at joint or combined courses like Business and Psychology or Law with Sociology, if you’re finding it hard to pick just one area. They can give you a bit of both worlds and keep your options open.

Hopefully that was a little helpful, but I fully believe you have got this, and remember you can always change your mind and try other things if one doesn't work out in the end.

Hi @mikum

I found it useful to go to open days to help me pick a course at uni, as when you go to course talks you get an idea as to whether the course content and assignments will be interesting to you.

You can also look at course descriptions on uni websites or in prospectuses.

I have a whole post about tips on picking a course and uni that I will link Tips on Making a University Choice - The Student Room

I hope this helps
