Yes, Biomedical Scientists are in demand. However, recruiters usually prefer candidates who are trained specialists. It can be tough to secure a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position straight after graduation because these programmes are highly competitive. One way to improve your chances is by choosing an IBMS-accredited degree with a sandwich year where you complete a one-year placement in the NHS or pharma industry to build practical experience.

Also, when selecting a university, consider the support and resources available to you. The degree itself is important, but the university environment can make a big difference in helping you succeed and gain the experience needed for competitive roles.

Yes they are, however, fair warning, a lot of people will be wanting to do their portfolios (and thus a lot of competition for jobs) and even then, you’ll be potentially waiting a few years when starting a job to even begin yours (there is a queue and when you join a lab, you join the back of it).

Wishing you the best if you choose Biomedical Science (ensure it’s accredited) but it is a long process!

As Cawery said, you can try for a trainee post but these are INCREDIBLY competitive (I am a trainee BMS) and a lot of people applying for the post will have multiple years experience, likely going to an internal candidate who already knows the system.

I got lucky myself as where I had 7 interviews prior to my trainee interview (three MLA interviews, three AP interviews and one trainee interview (I got accepted for two trainee interviews, one in virology and one in clinical chemistry, I was accepted for the chemistry one), I kind of knew the bank of questions, so prepped answers (I was an external candidate who ended up outcompeting the internal ones).

So don’t bank on getting the trainee post, obviously go for it but they are very hard to get and it is often easier to go for a MLA or AP post and then just gain the experience before applying as I already had several years NHS experience before getting this post.
