Can I be a UK paramedic with a history of epilepsy?

Hi everyone! 😊 I want to become a paramedic or EMT but I have epilepsy. My medication has stopped my seizures and I've been seizure free. Is this likely to be a problem for studying paramedic science or getting a job? Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

It might be worth contacting some of the Ambulance Trusts to ask this. Although employers can't discriminate against those with health conditions, they also have to consider the safety of patients and other employees. Paramedics need to drive and there are likely to be restrictions on this subject to when you had your last seizure.

Hi actually the police force I applied to withdrew my application because of my inability to get a hold of a full manual license as my medical provisional license got provoked by the DVLA because of my Epilepsy. They hadn’t even considered placing any reasonable adjustments in place and I don’t know if I can drive until I am fully medically investigated by the DVLA because in the past year I’ve had 2 seizures myself.

Can I just ask if you don’t mind did you and your neurologist agree to stop your medication? Because in the event of any need to drive in the role of a paramedic do you think it’s worth discussing whether it’s sensible to stay on medication or not?

Thank you. It’s because I can relate myself. And you know ever since having Epilepsy it has restricted my ability to a lot of things that I wished to pursue myself hence why for the best of yourself it’s definitely sensible and worth discussing with your neurologist.
