Stay away from Brno University of Veterinary Sciences
especially if you are a student with special needs
Dear people,
I am writing this message to share with you my experience at the Brno University of Veterinary Sciences.
To begin with, I will try to introduce myself:
My name is Myrto and, originally, I come from Greece. I started studying in Brno, Czech Republic, two years ago when the office for special needs didn’t yet exist. And when they actually established one, nobody informed me about it. I have a diagnosis for Asperger’s syndrome which means that -except the extra time during examinations- I need some more adjustments (mentorship, guidance during lectures etc). All of these were written in the educational instructions that I sent to the university, but the university itself wasn’t able to provide me with any of these.
In the Czech Republic we have a law stating that, to be admitted from one year to the next you must have a certain number of credits. In VETUNI that was 50 credits per year. During the first year, I managed to get 50 credits, but in the second year I only got 49 because one of the educational instructions that I sent to the university wasn’t followed.
Due to this one missing credit, the university suggests the following: “You have to terminate your studies now and wait one year to enrol yourself again in the first year, but you will have to repeat the examination on the subjects that you passed with D or E”. But these are more than half the subjects I have passed so far.
After this decision, I submitted an objection asking to get a recognition for all of the subjects I have passed so far. At this point, the dean of education called me at her office and told me that this is not possible. In other words, this university says the following “Now that you have passed Biology with a D it isn’t sufficient (eventhough I studied one month for it), BUT if you come next year, study again, and pass it again with a D, then it will be sufficient”.
A few weeks later, I submitted a second objection including a letter from my psychologist….no response.
Instead, what they did is that they tried to push me into signing a paper stating that I am requesting to terminate my studies with the excuse that “This would be the best both for you and the faculty”.
I wonder if any of you has had similar experiences with universities and if so, how did you cope with it?
Any advice would be useful
With kind regards
Myrto Varela
