Art and Design or Design and Technology PGCE?

Hi there, I'm feeling a little lost.
I first graduated uni in 2019 with a dual honours degree in Film Studies and Media. After a few years trying different jobs I’ve decided I want to retrain as a teacher. Ideally I would love to be an art teacher as art has always been something I have been passionate about and found a way to intertwine into my previous studies and jobs. (I have GCSE’s and A Levels related to art too)

When speaking to ‘get into teaching’ they supported my idea but also suggested the route of becoming a design and technology teacher. Partially due to my experience and partially because there are bursaries due to a lack of teachers in this field.

I took this info and looked into both options. There are limited options for universities to attend in the North East (where I live, have a flat etc.) offering PGCE’s in those subjects. Northumbria offers Art and Design but Newcastle offers Design and Technology. Unfortunately neither offer both.

This is where my issue lies, as I cannot drive, I rely on public transport so it would be easier for me to regularly travel to and from the Newcastle University campus but quite difficult for me to get to the Northumbria campus.

If I apply for Newcastle do you think I would be able to use that PGCE and QTS to apply for both design and technology teacher and art and design teacher roles in the future?

When you do a PGCE, you spend very little time in university. Most of your time is spent in school developing your practice. You will be offered two placements and the rule of thumb is you can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes each way to your school by public transport. I would really urge you get learn to drive before you do a PGCE as it is so difficult if you don't. By all means find out from each respective university, but this is certainly the case for me. You might go into uni once a week initially, but this will drop through the year.

Good luck!

Hi, I would reach out to these universities with your queries as they will be able to answer best. It seems like Newcastle is your better option especially if you can get bursaries for it as well. I would ask Newcastle if you could become an art and design teacher afterwards though or if you're limited as they will know where their past students have ended up and the limitations of their course.

Hey I’m just wondering how you got on with this? I’m at a similar problem. I have a media degree and unsure what avenue to take
