How do I write a Media Personal Statement??!?

Writing a Stand-Out Media Personal Statement

Applying to study Media at university is such an exciting step but I know from experience that writing your personal statement can feel like the hardest part!

I applied to university quite a while ago now, but I still remember staring at a blank page, wondering how to sum myself up in 4,000 characters. What I learned is that your personal statement isn’t about sounding perfect it’s about showing who you are, what inspires you, and why you’re passionate about studying Media.

Start with your story

Think about what first sparked your interest in Media. Was it making your own short films or podcasts? Analysing how social media influences society? Or maybe being curious about how TV, film, or journalism shapes public opinion?

Admissions love to see why you’re drawn to the subject. Instead of just saying, “I’m passionate about Media,” try explaining what specific experiences or moments made you realise it’s the right path for you. In my personal statement I wrote about always playing on iMovie with my younger sister making trailers and even using fake ketchup as blood.

Showcase your creativity and curiosity

Media is all about storytelling, communication, and creativity. Use your statement to highlight times you’ve expressed ideas, collaborated on projects, or developed new skills. For example:

Have you worked on a school magazine, video project, or social media campaign?

Do you enjoy analysing films, advertisements, or online trends?

Have you explored any media production tools, like editing software or digital design?

Even if your experience isn’t directly linked to Media, you can still talk about transferable skills like teamwork, time management, or problem-solving.

Show that you’re engaged with the world

Media courses are often about exploring how society communicates and changes. Showing that you keep up with current trends, news, or creative work can really strengthen your statement. You could mention:

A recent film, series, or campaign that inspired you

A media issue or topic you’d like to study further

How technology and social media have changed the way we tell stories

Keep it personal and well-structured

A strong personal statement reads like a short story about you what inspired you, what you’ve done, and what you hope to achieve next. Start with your motivation, move through your experiences, and end with your future ambitions.

And remember be authentic. You don’t need to sound overly formal or try to impress with big words. Admissions tutors want to hear your voice and understand your enthusiasm for Media.

Get extra help

If you’re feeling stuck, I’d really recommend downloading BCU’s free Personal Statement Guide. It includes an example from a Media applicant (which is so helpful for getting ideas) and lots of useful tips for structuring your writing.

You can also find more general advice on BCU’s “Making Your Application” page it’s full of great insights into what universities look for and how to make your statement stand out.

Writing your Media personal statement might feel daunting at first, but once you start reflecting on your experiences and passions, you’ll find your story naturally starts to come together.
