A Year in the UK: A Postgraduate’s Seasonal Guide 🇬🇧

Hello! I’m Audrey, a graduated Master's student at City St George's, University of London. When I initially came to London, I had no idea how quickly the one year of my Master's would pass. It wasn't until after graduation that I realised I could have enjoyed my time in London even more. And when I left London without knowing when I'd return, I felt even more regret for missing out on so many possibilities to experience the city and the country.

Therefore, I am starting this blog to share with you how to enjoy your year studying in the UK. In this way, when your journey in the UK finishes, you will have only unforgettable memories.

🍁 Autumn The Season of Golden Days

Not long after you start your programme, you’ll notice the leaves turning yellow on the streets, the air getting colder, and the pace of life slowing down. This is a great time to see the quieter, more peaceful corners of London parks, libraries, museums, or cafés where you can just sit and watch the world go by.

Since you have just arrived, it can feel busy at first. But once you settle into your routine, it becomes a comfortable season cool enough for long walks, but still warm enough to enjoy being outdoors. It’s a good time to make new friends, plan, and find your rhythm for the months ahead.

Must-sees: The Broad Walk in Regent’s Park, local cafés

❄️ Winter The Season of Festivals

Winter can be harsh it gets dark before 4 p.m., so it often feels like there’s less time to study or do anything else. But it’s also one of the busiest and most festive times of the year. Central London is decorated with Christmas lights, and festival markets open across the city until the New Year. It’s also the biggest sale season, so it helps to prepare a deep wallet and a detailed shopping list.

As an international student, my first Christmas and New Year in the UK was unforgettable. I spent it with friends from different countries we cooked together, watched movies, and exchanged small gifts. Even if you can’t go home, it’s a great time to make your own traditions with friends.

Must-sees: Christmas lights along Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street, Christmas markets around the city, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks at the London Eye

🌸 Spring The Season of Renewal

Spring everywhere brings a strong sense of new beginnings. In London, you’ll know spring has truly arrived when cherry blossoms and magnolias are in full bloom.

It’s also when you return to uni after a long break to start the second half of your Master’s programme. For me, spring was when I finally felt settled in the UK I had gotten used to life here, the way of learning, and the assessment system. But it also marks the start of a busy period: writing your dissertation, preparing for exams, and maybe planning for life after graduation.

Staying positive and energetic is important. One thing I found helpful was changing my study location moving to different libraries or a café in a park and working while watching the cherry blossoms flutter in the wind made study sessions feel a lot enjoyable.

Must-sees: Kyoto Garden, Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill, Kew Gardens

☀️ Summer The Season of Sunshine

Summers in the UK have been marked by hot, sunny days in recent years. The sun often sets after 9 p.m., so the days feel longer and you might feel like you have more time to spend outside. Every park in London becomes perfect for picnics, relaxing, or catching up with friends.

After your exams, you’ll also have time to unwind and travel before returning to focus on your dissertation. Since City St George’s campuses are centrally located, it’s easy to visit nearby beaches like Brighton or even take trips further afield. Summer is a great time to explore both the city and the wider UK while enjoying the sunshine.

Must-sees: Parks, Southend-on-Sea, Botany Bay, Deal Castle Beach

🌿 Final Thoughts

Experiencing all four seasons in the UK was one of the most memorable parts of my postgraduate journey. I hope that through this blog, you’ll also find ways to make your own meaningful collection. Who knows these might become some of the most unique experiences of your life.
