Predicted grades lower than what I want

I’ve been predicted BBC but I obviously had hoped for ABB and now can no longer go to Russel group in order to do computer science.should I apply to mid universities as place holders until clearing

Comp Sci is a competitive subject at top Unis - so its unlikely that any of them will need to put their courses in Clearing. But yes, you can apply to other Unis, make Firm and Insurance choices, and if you get very high grades on Results Day, you could then just dump any place and go into Clearing to pick up any other available place where you meet the grade requirements, or reapply next year with achieved grades.
Just to note that Russell Group won't necessarily be any advantage for COMPSCI - look for unis with good links to industry and internship/placement options regardless of RG or not. COMPSCI doesn't have the best grad outcomes so you need every advantage you can get.

Hi there,

Please don’t worry, BBC is still a solid set of predicted grades, and you have plenty of good options for studying Computer Science at excellent universities. While it’s true that most Russell Group universities tend to ask for higher grades (typically AAB or ABB), there are many modern and career-focused universities, like London South Bank University (LSBU), where you can study a professionally accredited Computer Science degree with great graduate outcomes and strong industry connections.

At LSBU, we offer several computing degrees including BSc (Hons) Computer Science, Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), Computer Science (Cyber Security), and Computer Science (Data Engineering). All are accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, which means the degree meets industry standards and prepares you for professional recognition and high-level career opportunities. LSBU students benefit from hands-on learning, industry-standard labs, and the chance to work on real-world projects with London-based tech companies.

You’re absolutely right to apply to a mix of universities now, including some “mid-tier” or realistic target choices where your predicted grades match the entry requirements. That way, you’ll have strong options lined up before results day. Then, if you achieve higher grades or there’s more flexibility in August, you can also explore Clearing, LSBU has an excellent Clearing process, and many students join us this way each year for Computer Science and related courses.

Remember, your university experience and career success depend much more on what you do during your degree, your projects, placements, and network, than on the university label. LSBU’s location in central London gives students access to a thriving tech scene, internships, and graduate opportunities in the capital, which can be a huge advantage for employability.

If you’d like to learn more, LSBU is hosting an Open Day on Saturday 15th November, where you can visit our computing labs, meet lecturers, and chat with students about their experience studying Computer Science.

👉 You can sign up here: LSBU Open Day.
👉 You can also chat with our students through our Unibuddy platform: Chat with our students.

So yes, definitely apply to some mid-range universities now, keep your options open, and use Clearing later if needed. You’ll still have every opportunity to build a successful, high-earning career in tech.
