Moving out from choosing to stay a home

Is there anyone else that chose to stay home for uni and then realised theyd like to move out quite late?

Hiya,
It is not uncommon to change your mind about accommodation. You might not be able to get a room in your uni's halls of residence anymore but it is worth checking with your uni's accommodation team.
If you are keen on moving out, you can try to find short term listings on platforms like SpareRoom, OpenRent and RightMove. I hope this helps.

Hey @Anonymous, this is a great question and I will say, this is not uncommon at all! Though I may not have a personal experience, I do have friends that have had a similar experience so I hope this will be helpful.

A lot of students (like my friends), start uni from home to save money or stay close to family but then later realise they are missing out on the social side of just independence of living away. The beauty of it, is that it is never actually too late!

Even if it is mid-year of later in the year, you can:

Apply for second-year accommodation early: many unis open applications in winter for the next year, and you can choose halls or private housing.

Look for mid-year room openings: sometimes students drop out or move, so a room opens up in halls or shared houses. This is usually advertised on social media or even platforms like these ones! I would also suggest checking sites like Unite Students, Student Roost or housing groups.

You can even ask your uni housing team for help to ask what is still available

So if you or someone you know is starting to feel that nudge, it is completely valid and normal! And trust me, you still always have time to make it happen. I hope this helped ☺️

Hi!

I know a couple of people who lived at home for their first year at uni and then decided that they wanted to live out for their second and third years, so it is not just you don't worry!

You have some options so have a think about what it is you would really like to do and then see what is possible for you.

You could see if there is any housing or halls available now if you wanted to move in straight away. Sometimes there will be rooms available or if you look on Facebook there are often groups on there where people post tenancy takeovers or people advertise if they have spare rooms in their student house.

You could see if there will be any housing available after Christmas. There may be some halls which advertise rooms starting in semester 2, or again look for houses as it is a new term so there may be some more options which open up for you.

Have a look now and think about housing for second year. If you have a group of friends at uni, on your course or another group, see if they want to get a house together for next year. People do start looking early so even though it feels like it is really early, people will be looking already so have a think and see if this is something you would want to do.

Look into halls for next year. Some uni owned halls will be for first years only and some will be for any year so have a look into this. Or, there will likely be some private halls options too so if you didn't want to move into a student house this could be a good option too!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @Anonymous 👋

This is a common decision many people make! Commuting tends to be alright but living on campus has benefits and also more opportunities to make friends as well. Check out your university accomodation page to see if there are any places left of off campus houses if you want to have a look at that but it is never too late!

Hi,

Yes, a lot of people choose to stay at home at first and then later feel ready to move out once they settle into uni life and figure out what they want. It’s completely normal for your plans to change as you get a sense of university life.

If you’re thinking about moving out now, you could look into options like university accommodation (if spaces are still available), private student housing, or house shares with other students. You can also speak to your university accommodation team, they’re used to this situation and can guide you through the next steps.

Hope this helps,
