University Support Services: How to Use Them (and Why You Should)

Hey everyone! 👋
I wanted to share a quick post about something that often gets overlooked, university support services.

When you start at City St George’s, it’s super easy to think you’ll just “figure things out” on your own (I definitely thought that at first 😅). But honestly, one of the best things you can do is actually make use of the support services available. They exist for a reason, and they can make a huge difference to your university experience especially at City St George’s!

💭 1. Wellbeing & Mental Health Support

Feeling stressed, homesick or just not yourself? The Wellbeing Service offers free, confidential counselling and wellbeing appointments. There are also online resources through the Student Hub, things like mindfulness sessions, workshops and wellbeing events throughout the year.

It helped me immensely when I was starting to feel homesick, one session can help you calm your mind!
How to use it: Log in to the Student Hub Support & Wellbeing Mental Health and Counselling, and you can self-refer for support directly.

📚 2. Academic Skills & Study Support

If you’re stuck on referencing, essay writing or managing your workload, the Academic Skills team can help. They run drop-ins, workshops and one-to-one sessions to help you study smarter (not harder).

While doing my dissertation, this was the easiest way to book a meeting based on my convenience and resolve my queries!
Where to find it: Check the Library and Learning Success section on the Student Hub, or visit the Learning Success Desk in the library for quick advice.

💼 3. Careers & Employability

Whether you’re looking for a part-time job, summer internship or planning your future career, the Careers and Employability Service has your back. You can book one-to-one appointments, get your CV reviewed, or join skills workshops.

This was a service I used to the extreme to brush up my CV thoroughly with their inputs, but pro tip to avoid last minute queue: the earlier you avail this service, the better!
Find it on: Student Hub Careers & Employability, or pop into the Careers Service in person for quick questions.

💸 4. Financial & Disability Support

If money’s tight, the Finance Support Team can help you apply for hardship funds or budgeting advice.
Students with disabilities, learning differences or long-term conditions can contact the Disability and Neurodiversity Team for learning support plans and DSA guidance.
Where to go: Both services are listed under Student Hub Support & Wellbeing.

💬 5. Community & Peer Support

Sometimes the best support is from other students! City St George’s has a strong student community with peer mentoring schemes, student societies, and wellbeing ambassadors who totally get what it’s like.
Find these through: the Students’ Union website or your course noticeboard, there’s always something going on.

Using support services doesn’t mean you’re not coping, it means you care about your wellbeing and your success. Make a note of these resources and use them whenever you need support, guidance, or just a bit of reassurance. Doing so can help you make the most of your time at City St George’s and have a truly fulfilling postgraduate experience.🌟
