Can I get into Durham to study economics

I’m wondering if I even have a shot at getting into Durham or if that’s unrealistic-

Durham is my dream choice but they have very low acceptance for economics. I have predicted A*A*A and all grade 9s at GCSE

BUT I don’t take further maths or economics Alevel and my personal statement isn’t stacked so that’ll hurt my chances..
does anyone know if there is any chance they’ll give me an offer? I also qualify for a contextual offer due to my postcode I don’t know if that helps

Do they require A-Level Further Maths and Econ? Your stats are strong and you would probably get an offer if there is no subject requirement. Be prepared for a straight rejection otherwise.

Aceptance rate (no. of enrolled/admitted students divided by no. of applications) is around 15-20% for typical Russell Group unis (except Oxbridge and London RG unis). As each applicant has upto 5 UCAS choices, i. e. make 5 applications, 15-20% acceptance rate means 1.5 applicants competing for a place. So keep up your effort to achieve your predicted grades, you have very chance getting into your desired uni. Good luck.

Do Durham ask for FM? No. Do they ask for economics A-level? No. Do they ask for better than A*A*A? No, they ask for lower than that for standard applications and a decidedly modest ABB for contextual applicants such as yourself.

Conclusion?

Hey! Honestly, with your predictions, you definitely have a really strong academic profile. Durham’s Economics course is competitive, but they don’t require Further Maths, and plenty of people do get offers without it. They care more that you can show interest and aptitude for the subject.

Durham also takes widening participation seriously and does adjust offers or give additional consideration. So you definitely have a real chance, it’s not unrealistic. Go for it!

Best of luck! 🤩

Hello!

I’m so happy to hear that you’re thinking of applying to Durham, especially for my course! Yes, economics is one of the most competitive courses at Durham but don’t doubt yourself just because of other people’s experiences. I for instance didn’t do A Level Further Maths and still got in and you don’t need to do A Level Economics to be considered as an applicant. I’d recommend you just apply and make sure to show your wider experience in your personal statement (despite what it looks like online, you don’t have to solve world poverty in your PS. For example you could include some wider reading you’ve done and link your past experiences into your economics course)

I wish you luck in your application and hope you end up applying !!
