My grades have got progressively worse throughout uni

I’m in my final year of an Oxford law degree right now, in first year I never got below a 2:1 and got probably around 65 on average. In second year I got 2 2:2s, 1st and the rest 2:1s. And in third year so far, the only grades I’ve had back have been 62 and 59. Should I just drop out? I’m putting the same amount of effort in but my grades are getting progressively worse. I want at least a 2:1 in my overall degree, I’d rather just have no degree than a 2:2 or 3rd.

There is still time to improve.

Hey good luck, OP, but it's only Third Week of Michaelmas. You can pick things up! I'm a year behind you and I know that the law finalists in my college are already freaking out about Schools, but you guys have time to lock in and and push the grades up. Just go live in the Bod, man. Think back to how you crunched through Mods (I still got the PTSD!) and do more of the same? NB the tutors are gonna deliberately mark us harder as we go through. That's how they do. They push us. Chances are your tutors gonna mark you harder than the Examiners will next year. Lock in, bro. You can do this!

I’m already locked in lol, I’m putting my 100% effort into it and it’s not working

Maybe you need to change your revision technique? Try to speak with some people in your year who did better in these assignments and ask for some tips, that has helped me at uni sometimes.

In any case, it's just your first two assignments of your last year, after the summer break. God knows I get academically rusty during the holidays and that the first assignments in the year are not up to my standards once I get used to uni again. So seek some academic advice, and persevere. This is the home run of your degree, don't throw it all away over some nerves!

It's good to read that you've given up excessive drinking.

Have you spoken to your tutor about it?
What feedback have you had on collections about what you need to do differently to get higher marks?

Bear in mind it is only the start of the year and you haven’t had the revision time you will have by the time you actually take Finals.

I haven't had my collections back yet and the 59 I only got back last night so haven't had time to speak to a tutor yet, but any time Ive asked how to improve before it's just "work harder and do more of the reading"

Not sure if this is meant to be snarky lol but I am mostly sober now

No, I'm pleased. But I assume you take my point.

My current bad grades have nothing to do with drinking, I was drinking all through first and second year and was doing well then, and have vastly reduced my drinking now, to nothing but failure and misery, so I guess the drink was never the problem

A 62 and a 59 is not failure and misery. You have got a 2.1 grade and a borderline 2.1 grade which can easily be moved up over the threshold by the summer.

I understand you feel disheartened but talk of dropping out over one 2.2 mark (which is one mark off a 2.1) in a formative assessment is an overreaction.

I'll probably be down to a 2:2 or 3rd by the time I do my finals :frown:

Or, you know, maybe you will improve and still be at a 2:1 or even a 1st when you do the finals?

Clearly "work harder" is not particularly helpful past a certain amount of work you've put in. So try to find someone else that will give you helpful advice. Maybe another tutor, or one of your classmates. Your classmates are a gold mine of help, if you find one willing to share their advice with you, honestly.

Hey I know I said lock in and you're already doing that, but are you also taking some time to chill out with friends and maybe doing some sport? When I was stressed out for Mods being physically active helped. Getting out of my room and going to the sports centre or even just going for a walk or bike ride made me feel better and then I'd go get on with the work.

I just went to Port Meadow two days ago. First time there. A friend from another college took me there and we had a good walk and yap.You been there?

I agree with people saying your grades are not that bad. You're close to where you need to be, and still have time to improve things. Don't panic! Easy to say, I know. I bet this time next year I'll be panicking. But I'll see if I can remember what people said on this thread.
