Help regarding choices of which course to study

Hi, I am currently doing first year medicine at the University of sheffield. I have achieved 3 A-stars in biology, chemistry and maths. I am in the first month of my studies and im not sure how much the subjects in medicine appeal to me. I have always had a keen passion for maths and chemistry, so I was wondering if there is any chance I could still apply to chemical engineering while being enrolled in medicine? I'm struggling to make a decision, and appreciate all the advice rhat anyone can give.

Be extremely careful before you leave medicine. It is not possible to leave medicine and then reapply if you have already ever commenced a medicine course in the UK. You would therefore be completely closing that door. Make sure that you get good and careful careers advice and consider all options. In order to have got onto a medicine course, you generally need to have been fairly dedicated in wanting to get there. It is quite common to question things in the first few weeks / months after starting. I would also be careful about making sweeping judgements about a whole course, based on the first 4 weeks. What has changed?

I guess it's more like im scared that I might not be able to cope with the subjects of medicine. Whereas for chemical engineering, maths and chemistry are something that im quite drawn too, so i was just considering that as an option?

Hiya,

It is normal to feel unsure or scared from the transition between A-Levels to your first year of university.

Think back as to why you chose Medicine in the first place - what made you pursue the degree in the first place. It is natural to feel nervous about your skills as it can be an overwhelming experience. Reach out to any professors like your personal tutor or support services from the university if you are feeling stressed.

If you would still like to switch to chemical engineering, here is a link that can help you out on the procedure and who to contact to transfer: Switching Courses.

Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions!

Hi @Beauty_31,

I'm sorry that you are feeling like this. Have you spoke with anyone at the university about this? There will be a team who can help you with this, provide advice and support you. I do believe it's important to enjoy and be motivated by the course you are studying so I would suggest having a good think about this. What made you go for medicine? I would suggest speaking to some lecturers to see if you can get a bit more of an insight into the chemical engineering course. You want to make sure you are doing the right decision.

Something that helped me with decision making that was very simple and I still use today, is creating a pros and cons list. It sound so simple but seeing the positives and negatives written down helped me with decision making. I used this for deciding what course to study and where to study it but you could do it about what you like about the courses or what the negatives for you are about the current one. Some great advice already but I would just say do what feels right with you, you are going to be studying the course for a number of years so want to enjoy it and make the most of it. You've got this! 🙂

Hope this helps,
^Zac

Hiya @Beauty_31

Just wanted to check in about your decision? My name is Ami and I'm in my third year of Medicine at Sheffield. I can understand first year can often be a significant adjustment period and there can be times where you feel uncertain of your decisions, I know lots of people experience this with both the choice of course as well as the university they've chosen.

I would recommend speaking to your Academic Tutor and the medical school student affairs team to discuss your decision, it is of course important you make the right choice for yourself and after going through the entirety of the application process it can feel very pressured as well. They will support you to make your decision, and there is some further guidance on this page as well: https://su.sheffield.ac.uk/advice-and-support/changing-courses

Please get in touch if there is anything I can help with.

Ami [3rd Year Medicine]
