Should I drop out of uni?

I have been enrolled into computer science at mmu for a foundation year and really don’t like it. I wanted to switch to psychology but I will either have to drop out and reapply through ucas or continue with my foundation year in computer science and start from psychology first year next year which will be guaranteed if I I get over 50% this year in CS. I’m not sure if I will get in for psychology next year if I reapply as the requirement is BBB and I have BBC(psych, business and English lit) but I was previously accepted for psychology before CS. I’m very unsure of what to do as I don’t want to do and was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

What made you switch to CS with a foundation year?

I was thinking about future jobs and people around me were suggesting it so I thought I’d do it but I realised I don’t enjoy it at all

Hi @Bus123,

I'm sorry that you are feeling like this, please know that you won't be the only one feeling like this after starting university. I had doubts during the first few weeks about course but I ended up just giving it all my best and I enjoyed the course a lot. There are many changes to our routines and lives when starting university so it is understandable we doubt our decisions.

Have you spoken to anyone at the university about this? I think it's important to study a course you enjoy so I understand how you are feeling. I would suggest speaking to academic support at the university as they will have further guidance on this and would have dealt with many students in a similar position previously. If it's the course that is the issue and not the university, could you see yourself pushing through the course or would you rather do a gap year and reapply for next year? I think sometimes deciding on what to do is harder than actioning it, so once you have chose what your next steps are, it will feel a lot better.

There are other options to consider such as clearing which you could take into account, foundation psychology courses at another university and reaching out to admissions teams at universities. You can take a look at our entry requirements here. Open days are great to get a better feel for the university, course and have the options to speak to current students, lecturers and admissions teams too.

Getting advice is a massive help but you are going to be in the lecturers, so you need to find out what is important from your course/degree and what option works best for you as an individual. You want to enjoy the course you are spending so much time and effort on. Something that helped me in the past and still does now was creating pros and cons list for each university and course, which really helped me to decide. This may be worth a try as you'll be able to think, write and see the positives to staying through the foundation course or reapplying. There is much more useful information within this UCAS page here. I'm sure you will make the right decision for yourself.

Hope this helps even a little bit! You've got this 🙂
Best wishes, ^Zac

Hi,

Sorry to hear you're not enjoying your course at Man Met. You would be welcome to apply for our BSc (Hons) Psychology degree for September 2026 entry although there is no guarantee you will be offered a place, so please bear this in mind when making your decision whether to withdraw from your current course. I would encourage you to speak with your Programme Lead, and get in touch with our Student Hub or our Union's Advice Centre to discuss your options so that you can then make an informed decision.

Hope this helps,
Mel

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been feeling like this. It can be so tricky when you are unsure of what you are doing and whether to swap courses or universities.

It sounds like it might be a good idea to continue with your foundation year so that you will be guaranteed to get onto the. course if you get 50%, especially if you are unsure about getting on with the BBB entry requirements. It's of course completely up to you whether you think you could finish the year if you are struggling with it.

You could also always talk to your uni about it and see if they would be open to accepting you with BBC or if there is scope for them to accept you with this, as if they say no I guess this kind of answers your question. It's worth having a chat to your academic advisor if you have one, or just someone at your uni and see what the chances are of being able to do this as this would make up your mind.

I think that just talking to someone at your uni about how you are feeling is a good idea anyway as it will likely really help you out with this. They will know a lot more about the ins and outs of the process so I would definitely say this would be a good idea.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
