Revision for Year 10 mocks.

Hi, so I am a Year 10 student who wants to achieve 9s in my sciences and maths (currently predicted 7/8s). However, revision is not my strong suit and I always resort to memorisation (for these subjects) instead of taking the time to understand the topic. Any tips on how to revise for the top grades and how to ace my mocks!!

My weakest - out of the subjects listed - are: Chemistry and Maths. Which, unforutanetly, are vital subjects for the path I wish to pursue.

Please help!!!

Hi there!

Its nice to hear how much you want to improve and ack your mocks!

Here is some advice i would give from someone who has been in your position:

Watch youtube videos that break down the concept easily to make concepts more understandable

Ask teachers about how to improve and for help on the topics that you're struggling in within these subjects

exam papers! Do past papers, get your teacher to mark them or even mark them yourself against the answers on the exam boards website and see where you can improve / look through feedback given by teachers

You also mentioned that you always resort to memorisation instead of revision. You can combine these!!
For example some ways of revision that also require memorisation are:

flashcards

mind maps (write down everything you know in one colour and then when your done write down everything else in a different colour so you can see what you missed, then read it all again and grab a new piece of paper and see if you remembered more !)

Teach the topic to a friend or family member

Highlighting important parts or keywords within a topic

Hope this helps!

In maths a good way to get a 9 is:
1. Have a set of notes (that you have written) that include only topics you are struggling with - include a model question which has clear working out (add explanations as to why you did certain things) use different coloured pens for working out and answers. The good thing about being in year 10 is that (if you do the notes neatly) you can have your whole pack of notes ready (make a set of notes for each new topic which are brief) for when you start revision for you GCSEs.
2. Use practise questions: don’t use past papers yet as you won’t have learnt all the content but you can use websites like “maths genie” and “physics and maths tutor” or use the end of chapter questions in the textbook. If you are struggling, use YOUR OWN notes to help you. If you are confident in maths, you can get a 7 without a lot of revision. To get an 8 make sure your working out is correct (VERY important) and learn the longer form, harder questions. Getting a grade 9 is simply combining getting the harder questions correct and making you don’t make silly mistakes. Remember that you don’t need to get the past 3 questions at the end of the paper to still get a 9
Hope this helps!!

Hi, great advice about maths has already been given by others in this thread so I will give some advice about Chemistry. For Chemistry, it’s really practice makes perfect. Use Physics Maths Tutor, Cognito or the CGP workbooks to try practice questions to get the skills, especially the maths ones, drilled in. Cognito is also good for explaining organic chemistry concepts. I would also recommend making your own flashcards, posters, etc.
