Higher English Folio Decision Help

Hi, first off I'm a very indecisive person. Secondly, I have two Higher English folio topics that I'm really struggling to pick between. My first one is 'There Needs to be More Education on Eating Disorders' and my second one is about how social media is affecting the English language. I have lots of evidence and research on both and would be sad to see one go. However, I am thinking about advanced higher English next year, so might be able to do the other then. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I hope I can help.

Maybe another factor to consider is if you're further along in one idea than the other (e.g., have compiled more research, have some ideas of what you're going to write, ect). If not, then I recommend that you do an essay plan, paragraph-by-paragraph, for both essay ideas. When I was struggling to narrow down my two Higher Folio ideas a couple of months ago that's what really helped me.

You could also consider which you feel you could easily slot more persuasive techniques into when writing. Again, that was another factor that helped me decide.

And you're right in saying that whichever one you don't do this year, you could do at Advanced Higher. And then, there may even be more research out there for you to use for it.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

Hey! I’m also taking higher English this year and I 100% agree with everything said above, I did the exact same when deciding on my essay topic!
Another tip that my English teacher told us was try to make your essay stance unique. Markers are more likely to award higher grades (according to my teacher) if the essay is presenting an idea that is new/original in some way, rather than just arguing something that the majority of people would already agree with.
So, for your essay about how social media is changing language for example, try to think how you could present an idea is unique or different in some way. E.g you could argue that it was a positive thing and improving accessibility (idk just made that up but ykwim).
Hope this helps ☺️
