Advanced Highers Choice

Hi, I'm thinking about doing Law at Uni so my current Highers are Spanish, French, History, English and Maths. I have my prelims in January/February and then I have to make my subject choice. I'm sure about picking Spanish next year because I want to do law with Spanish, however I don't know what other subjects to pick. I definetly don't want to do maths, but I really can't pick between English, History and French as I really enjoy them all! Any advice would be great.

Hi. I'm also in S5 and am struggling to decide my S6 choices too.

I really like all five of my Highers this year, but I managed to take two out of the equation. I felt like it would be very unlikely that there is enough S5's in my classics class who would want to take it to Advanced Higher (I seem to be the only S5 in my class who wants to be there). Then I managed to take Modern Studies out of the equation because I feel like the skills have always been pretty simple for me and I read the news a lot anyways, so I could keep up with that myself.

If we apply this to you, you could actually do your own learning for all of the subjects you want to take - however, it might be easiest to do that with a language.

You could also consider the preferred subjects for law. I like to use Strathclyde's entry requirements for this because I assume it'll be pretty similar to what other universities like to see too. At Higher, English is required, and History and modern languages are preferred. Using this logic, since you're already definitely going to take Advanced Higher Spanish, you could take English and History. But I know that easier said than done when you don't want to drop French either.

However, like you I still have the problem of wanting to take too many subjects. 😭 I want to take Advanced Higher English, History, and Business Management, and Higher Geography and Philosophy. The only ones that are non-negotiables are English and History. I thought it might be comforting to know that you're not the only one struggling which your course choices.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

Hi there! (:

Sounds like youve got a great range of subjects for this year, best of luck with the prelims!!

Adv higher wise, if theres any unis in particular your considering as jasmine was mentioning its worth looking at their entry requirements to see if theres any preferred subjects, also worth having a wee look at the adv higher courses on the sqa website 😊

theres a section on the sqa website for each subject which (i think!) is titled 'course content' - which will provide you with a pdf explaining the strucutre of the course, topics you'll cover & also these usually give a bit of a description of the type of job/higher education pathway that these qualifications relate to! - definelty worth reading over and seeing what sounds most interesting to you - might help narrow it down a little!

hope this helps (:

Definitely do Spanish if you are doing it at uni and I cannot emphasise enough how much you will thank yourself if you do history/English. I did both and generally have no idea what wI ould be doing without the foundation of theses. I do fear 2 ADH languages is ambitious in regard to French but do what you feel will be easiest and least stressful for you:smile:
