How have you found living a fair distance from town?

My son is looking at this university for next year but we're a bit worried about it not being walkable to town. I know there are trains but they stop quite early for student nightlife! There must be buses, so it' sobviously doable, but have you found this a nuisance at B'ham? Especially in the 2nd and 3rd year, when you're living off-campus.

Hi @Tinkjon

That is a very valid concern, however the first thing I would say is that he will not be alone with living there, and there will likely be lots of people going between the student accommodation and the nightlife!

There are a lot of clubs and bars on Broad Street, which would be a fairly long walk from UOB's accommodation, especially at night. However, I have found that my friends and I tend to get an Uber, which when split between a few people is not particularly expensive. It is also a lot easier and a little bit safer than getting public transport late at night.

I would recommend exploring the different accomodation options that are available to determine which one is in the best location for your son, as they are spread over the different sides of the campus. There are some accommodations in Selly Oak, which are still very close to campus! Selly Oak also has a student nightclub and several bars which would be in walking distance of some of this accomodation.

Hope that helps!

I’m a first year and I’ve found it to be not a problem at all. The walk to Broad Street (where the main clubs are) is a decent 20-25 minute walk, which has actually created some of my favourite memories weirdly. It’s the same distance to selly oak clubs too more or less, again which is not far when you’re walking with friends.

Also the Ubers are really cheap so it’s about £1 ish when you split with friends in an uber either way

If you have any more questions or your son wants to ask anything further to me feel free to private message me and I can give my details
