Which Universities are worth applying to for Econ based on my stats?

Hi, I’m in Year 12. I study Maths, Further Maths, Politics and Economics. I went to a poorly performing state secondary school in a pretty underprivileged area.I now attend a very high ranking grammar school. I want to study Economics at University but I’m not sure if it’s worth applying to the best in the country. My GCSE grades are 9999888777.
If I get predicted 4A*s and get 7.5 on the TMUA, is there any chance of me getting into Cambridge, LSE etc or have my GCSES ruined my chances?

Bro whattt😭😭 your stats are fine. You just need a great ps/ interview for those unis

Let me know if you want any help applying, I've just applied to Cambridge and LSE for econ. Our a levels are the same.

I spoke about a couple of books I read, essay competitions, courses, academic papers.

You want to have a few areas of economics (i apple about climate economics, trade with a bit of development in both of these and then game theory and econometrics ) and then research them so you have about 2-4 supercurriculars per paragraph/ topic to talk about.

With books, make sure the ones you put in your ps aren't popular econ (freakonomics), but a little bit more academic (research papers are very good and quick to read) . However, they can be good to read now in the year as they often contain many different areas of economics so you can figure out what topics to use in your ps (id recommend good economics for hard times).

Also lectures are great (online and in person). I think many universities broadcast their econ lectures online so you can watch some from wherever.

With work experience, don't include any finance/banking things unless you can directly relate it to econ, as your overall interest should be academic. A good one to do is the IEA future thought leader internship, which is at a think tank and is economic/ academic.

Considering your background, this should be fine, 4A* with FM and TMUA 7.5 is almost a guaranteed interview invite, and it is still 7A* and 3as at the end of the day. Focus on getting those 4 A* predicted for now, don't stress about your GCSE results.

Hey, to be honest I will not sugarcoat like the others, Cambridge and LSE do not care about if you went to a 'poorly performing secondary school' so the GCSEs are a let down. Many who attend these schools have majority 9s and 8s regardless. Achieving a 7.5 TMUA is easier said than done, only the top 8-10% will do so. Please focus on getting the right predicted grades first and consider Oxford Econ and Management which requires the TSA instead. Hope this helps

thank you i appreciate this lots, i have been thinking this. i take your point but i mentioned the nature of my school to make comparison between the avg and my own results - i ranked no1 in my cohort and my results were okay which gives a picture of how everyone else’s were, do you think this would be taken into consideration? i would also wanna ask of what benefit is taking the tsa instead when maths is my strongest subject by far? i’m open to considering taking it if it’s more sensible to do so
