Art gsce topic advice

Im in Year 10 but i started my art gsce coursework in year 9. Now that im in year10 i have the option to pick a new topic but im really conflicted between two topics, Art with text and Portraiture. I feel like Art with Text is very broad and I will be able to create many different styles and interpretations of it like posters, text manupilation and more. I have a very comic like artstyle which i didnt really get to express last year and i would love to use it this year. However while Art with Text really seems to fit my style and interest me, i feel like i will struggle to find artist primary sources and things i need to get good marks in. This is where Portraiture came in, as im not typically bad at drawing faces and people and i feel like it has many artists to choose from. Furthermore i went to an exhibition last year with someone doing clay portraitures and some full body ones. I still havent wrote about it in my sketchbook and i feel like Portraiture would be the perfect topic to use it for, while i wouldnt be able to use it for art with text. However, I feel like portraiture is a very limited topic and later on in the year i will start to grow tired and bored of it.
If anyone has done these topics or if anyone has any advice please tell me and i only have little time to choose and im very conflicted.

Hey @whatuser,

If Art with Text fits your particular art style the most, I would recommend choosing it over Portraiture. Whilst lots of fine artists have done portraits, many have also worked with text - remember, comic book artists and graphic designers can also be used as a source here.

Some very well-known artists who work frequently with text include:

Guerrilla Girls

Barbara Kruger

Tracey Emin

Jenny Holzer

Christopher Wool

Mel Bochner

Art with Text is all around you: it's the cornerstone of advertising. As someone who studied a Fine Art and Art History degree, Art with Text would be my personal choice here - it's much more expansive and allows you to delve into a lot more themes than a surface-level study of Portraiture.

Best of luck with your GCSE Art!

Thank youu this helps alot! after posting this i researched on both sides and realise portraiture can be a broad topic if i want it to while art with text actually does have alot of artists!

Hi @whatuser,

I studied art too during GCSE and then went into studying a diploma in art, art foundation and then a fashion course. I loved and still do enjoy drawing portraits. I agree with the response you've had above, that art with text is all around you which would be great for primary research. There is so much creative wording and art around us on a daily!

In terms of portraits being broad, I do believe that there are many other topics that can link to portraits such as emotion. You could draw various portraits with different emotions and styles. One style could reflect a more angry emotion and so on. What would you enjoy most? I think that's what's important. I wouldn't worry about the artists or what you would create or look into just yet. This is something that I have been told by all my teachers or lecturers. It's good to look at options but decide on a topic based on how you feel towards it. You will find artists and supporting research and so on naturally. I wouldn't worry too much about this before choosing a topic.

What do the topics mean to you? What will you enjoy researching, exploring and creating the most? It may sound really simple but creating a pros and cons list may help. I used pros and cons to decide on many things even what course to study or what university is better suited for me. I'm sure you will choose the right topics for you. You've got this! 🙂

Best wishes, ^Zac

Thank youuu, i think after researching both topics ive decided on portraiture as i realised comic-like styles can be considered in the topic as long as its still a portrait. Obviously this doesnt mean im not going to try to explore other styles this year but its comforting to know that i can always fall back to one im more familiar with. Also ive just completed my title page for it( although i have to redo it because i spelt portraiture wrong TWICE) and realised im quite happy with this topic. Thank you for the advice!

Hi @whatuser,

That is great to hear and I'm glad to have been able to help even a little bit. That is very true about the comic style, there are so many styles of portraits you could delve into. It's important to feel happy about your choice, I'm sure you'll do great! Feel free to ask any questions later down the line 🙂

Best of luck,
^Zac
