The Student Room Group

Research about Loneliness on Campus.

Hi, I am a first year Graphic Design student. For my brief, I have been asked to create a visual piece that aims to tackle loneliness on campus.

As part of this task, I am researching to see what other universities do for their students and how they aim to create more connections on their campuses. Whether this is hosting free events for students or just creating groups for tasks in classes, I would like to find out what your university is doing to help their students feel less lonely.
If you have anything whatsoever, please drop a comment including the name of your university and what things they do or have in place for students to make connections. (Examples of this can be having a student bar on campus, hosting free events, having social hubs, creating group tasks etc.)

Many thanks in advance!

Uni of Warwick residential community team have several events every week (like crafts, games nights and cook offs) which are great to get people involved and socialising.
Free events like karaoke at the pub are also amazing.
Societies also have loads of varied social events so there’s something for everyone

Hi lola.grace!

Here at LJMU we have just launched our Buddy Scheme! This is a scheme where our current students volunteer to be buddies with our new incoming students to ensure they feel welcomed and enjoy their uni experience, making sure they aren't alone during uni! They are trained in safeguarding, setting boundaries etc so everyone involved is safe and secure in what they are doing, they meet each other in public places, share advice and stories and can do activities such as join a society!

Joining a society is also a way to ensure our students can get involved and meet new people! We have a range of societies from sports to arts and crafts and even a mature students societies which students in any year can join through our jmsu website! It's all student led so that people can fee more comfortable coming to theses societies! We also offer events on our jmsu website that you don't need to be in a society to join up! For example we have "speed-friending" tomorrow in our student life building for free as well as a tour around the city and much more!

Alongside all of this, LJMU itself has multiple support teams to help students in their specific situation. For example, we have a mental health team, a crisis team, a wellbeing team and we also offer counselling to those who may need it as well as much more! These teams ensure students both current and new that there is always someone to talk to if they want or need too!

Hope this helps!
Katy,

I'm a university of edinburgh student normally but I'm currently studying abroad at UiT (Norwegian Arctic University). In my exchange uni, they do an event every 2 weeks called Waffle Friday for international students and basically we all come and get free waffles - with cheese, jam, ice cream and loads of other toppings. It's hosted in an events space in the uni that has loads of sofas and board games in it so people can chill and chat and play and spend loads of time there - all day if they want. Students can also volunteer during waffle Friday to make the waffles, which I do with a couple friends and it's genuinely such a good bonding experience.
