Research about Lonliness on Campus.

Hi, I am a first year Graphic Design student. For my brief, I have been asked to create a visual piece that aims to tackle loneliness on campus.

As part of this task, I am researching to see what other universities do for their students and how they aim to create more connections on their campuses. Whether this is hosting free events for students or just creating groups for tasks in classes, I would like to find out what your university is doing to help their students feel less lonely.
If you have anything whatsoever, please drop a comment including the name of your university and what things they do or have in place for students to make connections. (Examples of this can be having a student bar on campus, hosting free events, having social hubs, creating group tasks etc.)

Many thanks in advance!
Hi there!

At the University of Bath, there's quite a lot to help student connect and feel a part of the community!

Our Student Union runs a lot of free and low-cost event especially during Welcome Week but throughout the year as well. So for example pub quiz nights, movie nights etc.

There's also over 100 societies and sports clubs so there is definitely something for everyone. The socials also vary as well so we're inclusive of everyone joining and having a go!

The Reslife team are great especially when living in university accommodation as they regularly hold free events at the different social spaces of the accommodations.

I hope that helps and good luck in your research!

Thank you so much, this is perfect!
Hey,
I'm happy to give you a casual breakdown of what my university, Manchester Metropolitan University, does to help students connect.

Diverse Societies and Clubs: The Students' Union is amazing at offering a huge range of groups. It goes way beyond the basics, ensuring there’s something for everyone, from course-specific clubs to unique hobbies.

Targeted Social Events: The Union also hosts specific, free social events organised for smaller groups. For example, hosting a free 'Board Game Night' just for students from a specific course. It makes it easy for people who see each other in lectures to relax and connect.

The Union: They organise special pop-ups like vintage clothing, houseplant or football shirt sales, or jewellery stalls, bingo, etc

Student bar (aka Boundary): They host chilled events like weekly quizzes, showing sports matches. These are low-commitment ways to find friends with shared, non-course interests.

Free Seasonal Meet-Ups: The Union offers seasonal activities like pumpkin carving around Halloween.

MMU organises free events early on in the term, such as Welcome Week for new students to help them find their way around campus, get used to uni life, and make new friends. They also use small leaflets to share specialized activities, like I recently saw, a Glow Up activity session just for female students.

Practical Resource Sharing: The Union also gives out free second-hand items (like kitchenware, books, and games) to students. This is a brilliant practical place where students naturally start talking about their flats or courses while collecting things.

Hope this helps!

Hi there!

We have a big drive to tackle loneliness at university here at the University of Salford, with loneliness even being chosen as our student union's core strategy in recent years. I'll link an article on our SU website if you'd like to check out the announcement for this - here.

We also have a short 'training course' on our SU website which helps students and others at university to work through some thoughts, feelings and understanding of loneliness, with lots of tips for how to approach this issue at university if you are struggling yourself or even how you can help others, again I'll link it - here.

I find as a student that frequent events on campus for students to get involved in is a big one I see, whether this be something simple like cake decorating, popup stalls with homeware items and clothing, watching movies, or I recently saw an event for ice skating for the near future! So a real range of things. There is also a wide range of sports events and activities, from netball and team sports to archery (always interests me!) and run clubs - and many many more. Additionally, I know from being a committee member in a society that priority funding is given to societies who are requesting money for anything related to tackling loneliness which I think is fab!

We are a campus uni so this really helps with building that community feel on campus which was a big selling point to me when I was choosing a uni, and I can say now I'm in a third year that this feeling has continued throughout my time here. There's always lots going on and lots of areas to get involved with, including lots of options for mature students and international students with a big drive to help everyone feel welcome. It really helps create a vibe where there's space and acceptance for you and encourages students to reach out to each other from my experience - hopefully tackling the feelings of loneliness that can be so common as a student in a new environment.

Sounds like a great task you've been given, if I can offer any more input from my experience I'd be happy to add more 😊
