Can i switch courses in november?

I don’t like my uni course (year 1) i’m gonna give it one more week then maybe transfer course early November. Would this be possible?

Hi there,

Really sorry to hear you're not having the best time at the moment - please don't worry, because there are avenues you can explore relating to transferring.

You would have to speak to your personal tutor if transferring courses is what you want to do. If you're staying in the same uni just changing course it might be possible but this will ultimately be up to the department (its much less likely possible if you want to swap unis, if this was your wish you'd have to wait until next year). What your personal tutor can do is put you in touch with your unit convenors/head of year and help you find out A) whether transferring courses is possible, and B) if so, what you would need and what the next steps are.

I hope this adds - best of luck and try not to worry 🙂
November is pretty late to be changing courses, most unis are probably about halfway through the first term at that point.

Ultimately only your uni can tell you if it's possible. I would strongly recommend speaking to your personal tutor about it, as they can advise on the process and timelines (including whether you are too late to do so for this year) and also they may be able to help with addressing reasons why you're not so keen on your current course potentially.

Do also consider whether the reason you don't like your current course is unique to that course or if it's likely to be a factor on the new course (i.e. something to do with your current uni) or any other course (i.e. a factor that is simply a part of university life and study).

Hi there,

This really depends on the course you are doing and the university you are at!

I know at Hallam, there is scope to change if it is a similar course - so if you are doing marketing and want to swap to business management, there is potentially scope for changing this. But, if you are wanting to swap to something completely different this might not be quite as easy.

If you are wanting to swap to a different university, I'm not sure this would be possible at this stage but again it is worth discussing with the relevant people to see if you can do this.

I think the best thing to do is to talk to your uni about this as they will have the best knowledge on what is and isn't possible. You can make an appointment with your tutor or academic advisor as they may be able to help you and discuss your options with you for this so it is really worth asking! Even just asking the general help team may give you some better insight.

If it is not possible to swap courses, see if you can transfer in second year and go straight into second year. This may be possible which could give you some options, or you may have to go into first year but at least you will know what you are able to do.

I hope some of this helps

Hi @Anonymous 👋

I am sorry to hear that. It may be possible but you need to talk to your student advisor to see what they say and what they can do for you. Set up a meeting to see them and explain your situation and the decision you have made and they will be able to advise you on what the next steps could be! Hope it goes well 😊
