Help with understanding tuition fee loan and what I would be entitled to.

Hi, I’m currently studying with the OU and so far have always had my student finance accepted but I feel that my situation is a bit complicated and wondered if anyone knows the answer to my question.

I have previously studied a certificate of higher education in adult social care through the OU. One module started in 2020, the other in 2022. Both were funded with a tuition fee loan.

After deciding on a career change, I am now currently studying a diploma of higher education in criminology and psychology with the OU. I’m currently on module 3 (just started this month) and so far, all 3 of these modules have been covered with a tuition fee loan. I believe module 4 will also be covered? And then the qualification will be complete.

However, I am really enjoying this course and doing well. I’m considering the option of extending to the full degree but I don’t know if an extra 2 years would be funded. Info online is a bit confusing, especially as this isn’t a traditional uni 3 year route. Can anyone help please?

I wouldn’t be able to self fund so really just want to know if funding for an extra 2 years to complete a degree is even an option before I get my heart set on it.

Hi Kelsey993,

Will it be the same subject with the Open University that you will be carrying on to complete a full degree?

Thanks, Clare

Hi, thanks for you reply. Yes, I am currently studying the diploma of higher education in criminology and psychology (course code W57) and I am thinking about ‘upgrading’ to BA criminology and psychology (course code Q98).

Hi Kelsey,

If you don't previously have a qualification then you'd be able to apply for the new course you're looking to study. Thanks, Jason

Hi, please see original post. I do already have a certificate of higher education in a different subject (through the open university). Studied at part time intensity. Module 1 in 2020, module 2 in 2022, both funded with a tuition fee loan.

I am currently studying the diploma of higher education in criminology and psychology (course code W57) on a part time basis, 3 modules covered with a tuition fee loan so far. I believe the 4th and last module will also be covered with tuition fee loan.

Taking into account this information (and my previous study as explained above), I am looking to see if it would be possible to extend my current qualification (diploma of higher education in criminology and psychology W57) to a full degree (BA criminology and psychology Q98). This would entail studying a further 2 modules on a part time basis. I am enquiring as to whether the extra 2 modules needed to complete the final year of the degree would be covered with tuition fee loan.

Hi Kelsey,

Base on what you have advised you should be fine for finance for the degree. We would ask the university to send through a change of circumstances to confirm you're changing to the degree and we can then update the application. Nothing is definite till you apply and the assessor can review and confirm for definite.

Thanks,
Claire
